Three years ago, some CATCH freshmen took
part in a competition where they customized a
Converse shoe, and the winning designs were
produced. Three years later, the winners are
now seniors and have come a long way since
2009, becoming Original CATCH kids, a title
given to students who have attended CATCH
since the ninth grade. The funny thing about
growing up and change is that the new self
cannot recognize the old self. Take a look at
how these original (or OG) CATCH kids have
grown from winning a shoe competition as
freshmen to seniors on their way to college.

Acrylic
nails
Acrylic nails have always been a major fashion
phenomenon. Little girls couldnt wait for their mothers
to let them wear acrylics and style them whichever
way they wanted to. However in inner city schools
acrylic nails are getting harder and harder to find.
What was once a necessity is now a rarity, and one
must wonder, why? Economy. Americas economic
situation has been in ruins for a few years now, and
experts say it will get worse before it gets better. But
nail salons arent economists, and instead of lowering
prices for consumers theyve raised them. Inner city
girls simply cant afford stylish acrylic nails every two
weeks anymore. Out-of-style. Fashion trends come
and go, and as acrylic nails have reigned for so long,
its time for the polymer powder and adjoining liquid
to take a break. Health. The longer acrylics are left on
nails the weaker natural nails become. When acrylics
are finally taken off, the natural nail is left brittle, soft
and sensitive, and wont return to normal for a few
months. If the tip is separated from the nail bed,
fungi can get in between and cause a nasty infection,

resulting in the removal of a whole nail. Accidents

can also occur that can rip off part or all of the acrylic
and natural nail as well. Many jobs prohibit their
employees from wearing these nails for these risks
as well. Acrylics will always be remembered as very
stylish and fashionable, but their time has come and
gone in popular culture.

Its funny how history repeats itself time and time again.
This year, two CATCH faculty members teach at the very campus their
relatives attended. Miss Fukuyama, the World History and Government

shocked when they found out that their father and uncle, respectively,
attended Audubon Middle School. Its fascinating how their relatives
attended Audubon at the same time and how decades later, they
both teach in the classrooms their uncle and father sat in.

MATH MESSING WITH STATISTICS

Regardless of how much, or how little we actually see of it, mathematics is all around us. It's so
ingrained in our daily lives that it's practically impossible to go a day without needing to use math.
You can't go to the store without adding up costs for groceries and you can't watch most sports without
hearing some statistics on the players or the teams.

Of all of the different branches of mathematics, statistics is probably one of the most noticeable
ones in sports. Let's take basketball as an example. It's very important for basketball players to have a
decent free throw percentage. This is a type of statistic that tells you how often a player successfully
shoots a free throw shot. Other statistics include things like number of assists, blocks, steals, points,
and many more. All of these are very important to determine who is the best player.

However, statistics are strange in many regards. If used or viewed incorrectly, they can lead to
completely false conclusions. For instance, let's say we want to compare Kobe to LeBron. To keep it
simple, even though basketball is played in four quarters of 12 minutes, let's just look at their field shot
percentage for two imaginary halves of one game, as shown in the table below.

First Half Second Half Total

Kobe 15 / 30 3/5 18/35
LeBron 2/5 14 / 25 16/30

From the table, we can see that Kobe made 15 out of 30 shots in the first half and 3 out of 5
shots in the second half. This means that during the entire game Kobe made 18 out of the 35 shots he
took. LeBrons total was tallied the same way. Now, let's say we wanted to ask, Based on their shots
only, who was the better player? Here's where the weird part of statistics kicks! Depending on how
you choose to look at these statistics, either one of them can be considered better than the other!
Let's change the fractions in the first and second half to percentages so it's easier to compare them:

First Half Second Half Total

Kobe 50% 60% 18/35
LeBron 40% 56% 16/30

If we look at the first half, Kobe clearly has a better shooting percentage than LeBron. So we'd
say during the first half, Kobe outdid LeBron. Now, looking at the second half, we see the stats are
repeated. Someone looking at these percentages might say, It's obvious that Kobe did better than
LeBron since he beat him during each half of the game! But how about we look at the totals? Kobe's
total (18/35) comes out to 51.4%. LeBrons total, however, is 53.3%. Therefore, Kobe beat LeBron
during each quarter, and LeBron comes out on top in the end. How in the world did that happen?
Weighted averages!

To understand how this happened, we need to look at exactly how many shots each player took.
The following bar graph shows a visual that might help. Kobe took the bulk of his shots in the first half
(when his percent was 50) and took only a very few shots in the second half (when his percent was 60).
This is why, when we look at his total percent, it'll turn out to be closer to 50 than to 60 percent.
LeBron on the other hand, took few shots in the first half (when his percent was 40) and took many
more shots in the second half (when his percentage was 56). Thus, LeBrons total shooting percent
ended up much closer to 56 than to 40.

First Half Second Half

Sometimes its hard to see whats going on without an exaggerated example. Lets imagine that
a very bad player ends up making 0 out of 100 shots (or 0%) in one half. Then he makes 1 out of 1
shots (100%) in the second half. Hes made a grand total of 1 out of 101 shots. This is just shy of 1%.

So as youve just seen, statistics can sometimes be deceiving. Nevertheless, theyre still very
important. They give us easy ways to compare overall performance of players in sports. But, once
again, be careful of how you look at them!

compare work and play in our everyday lives, we will gain a

graphical interpretation of how opportunity cost affects the
limited amount of time we have to choose to either work or
play; and whichever one we choose, we are losing the

62
opportunity to spend time doing the other. This is the
opportunity cost of time.

WORK A

8
PLAY

If we choose point A, located on the work-axis, we are

choosing to spend all of our time working and no time
playing. The opportunity cost of this choice is to have no play
time. However, if we choose point B, located on the play-
axis, then we are choosing to spend all of our time playing,
and the opportunity cost is to spend no time working, we
would be losing all of the benefits awarded to us by work and
the opportunities which our work may lead to.
In reality people do not live their lives entirely
engrossed by only work or only play, they spend their time at
an arbitrary point such as C, enjoying a balance of work and
play. However, no one is able to spend their time anywhere

15
above the opportunity cost line, because time is a limited
commodity which we cannot create more of. What we are
able to do, is to spend our time working and playing to enjoy
our lives and open up new opportunities.

Opportunities Knocking
Life presents itself with countless opportunities both
monetary and otherwise, and regardless of what we choose
there is a cost for what we didnt choose. Through
education, hobbies, work, and other passions it is up to us to
broaden our horizons and be prepared to benefit from the
opportunities which will present themselves. In a world filled
with mathematical models, statistics, and calculations, it can
become overwhelming to try and evaluate ones future, but
luck is no more than being prepared to take advantage of an
opportunity which presents itself. It is up to us to be
prepared to catch the opportunity.

Kimonos have been a part of Japanese
culture as early as the 5th century.
Kimonos have changed over time as
many various styles have gone in and

heavily associated with the Japanese,
the first kimonos were influenced the

CATCH Hall inspired by

ART MATTERS CATCHs Fashion Class participated in a

room makeover, that may have been decorated for HGTV.
In making over the room, the fashion class drew inspiration
from the famous fashion phenomenon Missoni.
In the late 1960s Missoni took the world by storm,
introducing their fashionable collection of knitted dresses,
coats and sweaters. What made Missonis claim to fame
so remarkable was how they went back to the basics by
combining the vintage knitted dress fashion trend of the
1920s with modern designs and a groovy new twist. A
creator of exceptional knitwear, Missoni has been noted
as an artform as well as a business. By the early 2000s
Missoni has become the reigning leader in knitwear,
expanding their designs to include knitwear for all aspects
of the modern lifestyle. In September, Missoni introduced a
collection for Target made up of 400 items using the Italian
luxury design houses legendary zig-zag pattern. The line,
which is also Missonis biggest limited-designer collection,
sold out at most stores and online in less than a day.

Timberland Shoes has a mission to equip people to make
a difference in their world. CATCH fulfilled Timberlands
mission statement to its full potential, customizing the work
boots in various ways with paint to invoke originality and
style. Having the children customize the shoes themselves
creates a hands-on assignment, making a difference in how
the children understand art.

Our MISSION is to provide the opportunity for under-achieving, low socio-
economic youth with an education that fosters critical thinking and the development
of his or her artistic talents, interests, and learning ability. We believe our primary
responsibility is to develop a learning environment that incorporates the arts,
computer technology, and real life experiences in the community so that our
students will thus gain a practical purpose for their education. The foundation
of our program is to educate our youth through inclusive partnerships between
students, teachers, and parents. This approach addresses students as living,
spiritual, active members of the community giving them a place to prepare to
contribute a part of themselves to society at large.

Our VISION is that every student who attends C.A.T.C.H. will be successful
and adjust to and excel despite the realities of their lives. As a community, we
are dedicated to the empowerment of our inner-city youth. Our goal is to function
as extensions of the family. By engendering self-motivation and critical thinking
united with participation and creativity for this special group of students, we can
impart important skills that help to unlock academic achievement and the ability
to function in todays society. Our vision is to create a community which values,
encourages, and insists upon its members active participation in the education of
its youth. We invite all that care to share in this vision for our children to become
partners in this educational process.
