Instructions and notes concerning the program

"Schrack CurveSelect" V1.00

The "Schrack CurveSelect", which is a Microsoft Excel based application, provides a complete scaled-
graphic representation of the tripping characteristics of the Schrack MC and MO circuit-breakers,
motor-protective circuit-breaker BE and also low-voltage h.b.c. fuses with absolute values.
The objective of the tool is to graphically represent only the actually parameterized tripping charac-
teteristics - from the wide range of setting possibilities for a selected circuit-breaker - in order to provide
a simple optical check for the selectivity and to document these facts in the simplest possible manner.
At the same time, the program provides assistance to the user by display and verification of the setting
possibilities and setting limits. Limit values and setting possibilities are tracked interactively when entered.

Display type:
The graphical representation can be accessed at any time by accessing the "Kennlinien<>Curves" in the
worksheet toolbar. All activated tripping characteristic which were entered without an error message are
displayed. The tripping characteristics diagram is a double-logarithmic representation on a scale of 5 x 7
decades (1A to 100kA; 1ms to 2h). The time and current axes are absolute.
The mean value of the parameterized tripping characteristics is displayed. The tolerances of the response
range as well as the tripping times are not displayed. In the non-delayed overcurrent release range, the mi-
nimum command time is indicated, i.e. the conductive interval at which an irreversible trip ist initiated. This
corresponds to the melting time (minimum melting curve) with fuses.
The current, voltage and phase position dependant total opening time - which is comprised of the response
delay, switching delay and arc quenching time - is not considered by the displayed characteristics, as the
current limiting property of the circuit-breaker due to the electrodynamic effects on the quentching device in
the high current range cannot be considered in this form of representation. The range of this electrodynamic
limit is represented on the diagram by the response value of the non-delayed overload release using a
dashed vertical line. From this value onwards, you are refferred to the Schrack Main Catalogue for further
details relating to selectivity and selectivity tables.
The characteristics of the respective circuit-breaker ends with the value of the ultimate short-circuit brea-
king capacity Icu which depends on the device type and rated voltage.
The respective designation, switch and release type and the set parameters are displayed in the characte-
ristics headers to provide an overview.
Depending on the circuit-breaker type, a maximum of 2 or 3 tripping characteristics for a type can be repre-
sented simultaneously, depending on if a selective release is available or not available for this type. Further-
more, three fuse characteristics can be represented simultaneously

General specifications:
In addition to the language selection features on the "General" worksheet, a few general details can be de-
fined for the documentation which will be displayed at the top right-hand corner in the trip characteristics.
In addition to the company name and the name of the system, the name of the author and the date of crea-
tion as well as the mais voltage and frequency are entered here.
The last two details are particulary important as they are used to determine the values for the rated short-
circuit capacity (Ics and Icu) of the circuit breaker, an thus the lower end of the characteristics.
The tripping characteristic of circuit-breakers which are not suited for the selected rated voltage will not be
shown on the release diagram! In this case, the error message "Ue > xxx V!" will be displayed in the mask
of the respective circuit-breaker.

Call and input:

In order to display the tripping characteristic, the selection and parameterisation of the circuit-breaker is
necessary after the general datails have been entered.
The seletion of the device type is implemented by selecting the respective switch type worksheet in the
worksheet bar. As soon as it is selected the input mask for the respective switch type will be appear. The
input mask enables input for two (with non-selective switch types) or three switches on this type.
Data input is implemented from top to bottom with the designation of the switch in the system. The desig-
Data input is implemented from top to bottom with the designation of the switch in the system. The desig-

nation can be chosen as any desired alphanumeric series of characters.

Important: The characteristic only becomes active with the designation!
After the designation, the selection of the basic device type, the release type as well as the rated current is

made. The respective selection options are indicated on the right hand side of the respective input field.
After selection of the device type, the subsequent parameterisation by entry of the required settings in the
respective input fields is made. The possible parameter values are again indicated on the right hand side
of the respective input field.
Underneath the input fields, a field for indication of faulty data is included. Details concerning missing or
incorrect inputs is indicated in this field. The characteristics of the respective circuit-breaker is displayed
in the characteristic diagram only when fault messages are no longer displayed in this diplay field!
For the sake of providing a clear overview, some checkboxes are available in the input mask which dis-
play the absolute values for the set tripping current. They provide help or assist in input verification of re-
lative setting values.
A further field provides a warning when non-useful, but possible settings are selected.
In the bottom most fields, the limit values for the rated short-circuit breaking capacity and ultimate short-
circuit breaking capacity (Ics and Icu) which depend on various parameters, as well as the rated short-
time withstand current Icw for some switches, are displayed.
In addition to the selection and parameterisation of circuit-breakers, the selection of a "Fuses" worksheet
as well as the input of fuses is possible. As in the case with circuit-breakers, the characteristic is activated
by the input of an alphanumeric designation in the designation field. After the selection of the fuse type
(currently only gL tripping class types supported) and the rated current, the respective fuse characteristic
is displayed in the tripping diagram with a faulty-free entry.

Selectivity observations:
As soon as the " Kennlinien<>Curves" page is selected in the worksheet bar, the tripping diagram with the
tripping characteristics for all activated and fault-free assigned descriptions for cirquit-breakers and fuses
will be displayed.
As is generally the case in practice, a simple verification of the selectivity of the cirquit-breakers and fuses
which are one or below the other can be implemented using the tripping characteristics. The selectivity bet-
ween the switchgear devices/ fuses is assured provided that the characteristics neither intersect or touch
one another. The selectivity limit (discrimination threshold) is achieved at an intersection or point of contact.
The response limit of the non-delayed overcurrent release Ii is continued as a dashed line in the tripping
characteristic. Generally, the selectivity limit has been reached when the tripping characteristic of a down-
stream switch/fuse is contacted by this line. However, a higher selectivity limit ist possible partially due to
current limiting properties of the circuit-breaker and motor-protective circuit-breaker, which cant be taken
into consideration as already stated at the start of this explanation. Once again you will be referred to the
selectivity tables in the Schrack Main Catalogue for determination of the maximum selectivity limit.

Free-style curves (FSC):

As well as the display of tripping characteritics, via the sheet "FSC" the display of free-style generated
characteristics is possible so that the display of customer-specific curves is possible.
As by the tripping curves here also to activate the curve an optional name is necessary. Then the
input of 3 optional curve labelling is possible. Via the following input field it can be decided if the
lettering of the curve header is shown on the right or left side. The actual position of the curve
labelling is decided by the first input value of the curve.
The input of the current/time values if from top to bottom only. Input of up to a maximum of 100
coordinates is possible. The values must be within the valid input range (1A to 100kA; 0.001s to 10000s).
The inputted points of the curve to be generated are shown in the curve.
Invalid inputs are ignored with an error message.
The generation of the curve to be shown is carried out with a smoothing function. Jump functions
within the curve can be achieved either by omitting an input line or by the double input of a
coordinate point.

Documentation:
In the default delivery state of program 1, all input fields are blank. After the inputs have been completed,
they can be used in the future by saving them (upper toolbar) and can be reused with further searches.
However, it is possible to save them under another file name.
For simple documentation of the characteristic diagram, it is possible to print it directly after selection of
"Kennlinien<>Curves" in the worksheet toolbar (File: Print: Selected pages) or select the prefered gene-
ration of a PDF (as with the selection of a suitable PDF printer)
The tripping characteristic diagram can also be copied into the clipboard (Edit: Copy) and then, for example,
it can be pasted into a text processing program.
