INTRODUCTION

Region VI or Western Visayas is composed of the four provinces of Panay, the


Guimaras Island and the western portion of the island of Negros and its outlying islands.
It is bordered on the east by the Visayan Sea, on the west by the Cuyo East Pass, on
the north by the Sibuyan Sea and Romblon, and on the southwest by the Cagayan
Island. The total land area of Western Visayas is 20,223.2 square kilometers. kms. The
provinces of Aklan, Antique, Capiz, Iloilo, Negros Occidental, and Guimaras are
included. Bacolod, Bago, Cadiz, Escalante, Himamaylan, Kabankalan, Passi, La
Carlota, Roxas, Sagay, San Carlos, Silay Sipalay, Talisay, Victorias, and Iloilo City are
the sixteen cities that make up the area, with Iloilo City serving as the regional capital.

A. Port of Access

Most of the islands in western Visayas are easily reached by direct flights from
Manila, and some from Cebu, via Cebu Pacific (www.cebupacificair.com) and
Philippine Airlines (www.philippineairlines.com). Caticlan Airport, the gateway to
Boracay is likely the busiest airport.

Regular bus trips are available to roam around each island.

(ILO).

RoRo trip starts from southern Luzon to points in the
Visayas. Usually the route is from Manila > Quezon
Province > Camarines Sur > Albay (Bicol), and
Sorsogon(this is where Matnog Ferry Terminal is located. You first ferry
terminal from Luzon to Visayas).

Getting Around: The best way to get from Manila to Western Visayas without a car is to

F. Major Cultural Groups

The region’s ethnolinguistic people are called Panay-Hiligaynons (Ilonggos,


Aklanons, Capiceños, Antiqueños, and Negrenses).

G. Major Industries

The major economic activities of the region are farming, sugar, rice and corn
milling, fishing, mining and trading. Forward and backward integration in
production, processing or marketing are good areas for investment. Other
important industries include livestock and poultry raising and cottage industries
such as rattan craft, food preservation, ceramics and confectionery
manufacturing.The region has a competitive advantage in the production of
seaweeds, mangoes, pineapple, banana and cashew.

Outside of Luzon, the region is one of the biggest contributors to the national
economic output. Its average regional share in the GDP from 2010-2015 is 4
percent and contribution to GDP growth is 2 percent. GRDP growth fell from 7.7
percent in 2011- 2012 to only 4.1 percent in 2012-2013. It managed to bounce
back with 5.2 percent growth in 2013-2014 and an impressive 8.3 percent in
2014-2015, making Western Visayas the second best-performing region in the
country for that year. The impressive overall economic performance of the region
in recent years was largely contributed by the industry and services sectors.

H. Languages/Dialects Spoken

The languages native to the inhabitants of Western Visayas are Hiligaynon,


spoken in Iloilo, Negros Occidental, Guimaras, and Capiz (where it is known as
Capiznon). It is the lingua franca of the region. Kinaray-a, spoken in Antique and
parts of Iloilo, Capiz and Aklan.
