Behavior Contingency Plan (BCP): Staying on Task

Undesirable Behavior Targeted: Being off task during social studies class: not following teacher instructions,
not working on current assignments, engaging in activities not related to social studies, not participating in
cooperative group learning activities, and disrupting class in general.
Desirable (expected) Behavior Targeted: Staying on Task during Social Studies class. Expected behaviors
include: Working on the task at hand, being an active listener, respecting others by raising a hand and letting
others speak in turn, supporting group members during cooperative learning, and using allotted time wisely
Types of positive reinforcements
Immediate R+: Students will earn pieces throughout the day and add the pieces to the panel currently being
filled. As they earn the predetermined number of pieces, the puzzle piece is filled and then removed to reveal
what is below it.
Ongoing R+: There will be 4 puzzles and then a final reward.
I. Puzzle #1: Earning the Map and land for the 3D model. Once all four pieces of the puzzle are filled and
removed, the map is revealed. The mini reward will be class participation in a Kahoot! about the Alamo.
II. Puzzle #2: The Resources. Once all four pieces of the puzzle are filled and removed, we will discuss:
a. The Wood: types of trees in the area and the wood used in constructing the Alamo.
b. The Stone: the types of stone that is prevalent in the area, stone buildings, etc.
c. The Mortar and Adobe: what it is and how each building at the Alamo was constructed.
d. The Metal: other construction materials used to construct the Alamo
The Mini reward for this panel will be building the base of the 3D model.
III. Puzzle #3: Earning the Society. After each piece is filled and revealed, we will discuss:
a. The people that lived at the Alamo, the important figures during the battle of the Alamo, etc.
b. The livestock that was kept at the Alamo.
c. The food that they grew and ate at the Alamo
d. The buildings and the purposes they served.
The mini reward for this panel will be building the 3D model of the Alamo
IV. Puzzle #4: The final four puzzle pieces will earn the BIG and FINAL Reward. As each piece is revealed,
the class will earn the following mini rewards:
a. The Play: The class will vote on which play they will perform.
b. The Parts: The class will draw parts from a bag randomly and receive their lines for the play.
c. The Songs: The class will decide which songs they will sing during the play.
d. The Stories: The class will choose short stories to read, and other activities for the day will be planned.
Overall R+: Remember The Alamo: A day devoted to learning, sharing and Remembering The Alamo. There
will be a play that includes songs, poems and stories. Students will invite parents, and we will share our 3D
model and our production with the entire school. Students will be encouraged to dress the part.
Details:
o Teaching the desired behavior: I will explain why staying on task is so important. I will explain exactly
what staying on task means and what my expectations are.
o Teaching the Plan: I will explain the board and how it works on the first day, and give reminders the first
week. I will watch for students staying on task and reward them with puzzle pieces. At the end of class,
students will add puzzle pieces to the large puzzle piece. Once a piece is filled, it is removed/revealed. The
next day before class, mini rewards will be given. For the larger projects (the 3D Model Base and 3D model
construction), an entire class period will be devoted. This will happen the next class period. For the final
reward puzzle, as each piece is filled, the mini reward will be given at the end of class. The final, large reward
will require the class to plan and cooperate with one another, teaching them valuable communication skills.
We will devote 1-3 class periods as needed to plan our Day of Remembrance.
o TEKS: 113.15. Social Studies, Grade 4: Topics include Texas History and Independence, Geography,
Government, Culture and Social Studies Skill building.
o Options: Depending on the number of class periods, or whether this is a closed classroom model,
modifications can be made by increasing the number of pieces required to reveal a puzzle piece, (If there are 3
classes, then increase the number by 3). The final reward can also very. Since this is the year 4th grade would
see the Alamo, a field trip could be incorporated to the Alamo or the Texas History Museum. For students
with LDs, modifications may be needed to ensure their participation is positive, (providing appropriate
readings, etc.)
