- To understand what Harf of Jarrs are and what they do
Learning Objectives - To memorize the first five Harf of Jarrs

Lesson Review

At the very beginning of studying Arabic, we learned that there are three kinds of words: s,
s, and s. Recall that a is a word that makes no sense unless another word comes
after it. There are different kinds of s, but we will now focus on one type: (Harf of
Jarr).

Whereas s have four properties (Status, Number, Gender, and Type), s have no
properties. The s only job is to beat up another word after it. In this case, the
makes the word right after it (hence, its name). There are eleven s. For now, we will
focus on the first five:

1.
: with
a. Example: (with/in the name of Allah)
2. : I swear by
a. Example: " (I swear by Allah)
b. Note: this is only used with the word Allah
3.
: like
a. Example: (like a boy)
4. : for
a. There are two options for this particular : it can be either or

i. Whenever is used with a pronoun, it will have a fatha
1. Example: (for him)
ii. When is attached to any other , it will have a kasra

1. Example: (for the messenger of Allah)

5. : I swear by
a. Example: (I swear by time)

Remember, these s beat up the word right after them. When they do this, we call them
(Jaar) and the word getting beat up (Majroor). The and its victim together are
called (Jaar Majroor). Lets look at a quick example:

"
Can you spot the ? The letter is the and the word is the . Notice that the
