Tostartwith,IwouldespeciallyliketoelaborateonfuturegoalsforwhichIhavelongedin
termsofmyfieldmystudy,SocialWork.

Firstly,withrespecttotheprinciplepurposeofSocialWorkprofession,thepursuitofthewell
beingofpeople,IhavechosentomajorinSocialWorkinthehopeofmakingsocialchange
possiblebymeansofadvocacy.DiscussinginthescopeofCambodiancontext,Iamconvinced
thatthroughthepracticeofadvocacymechanism,socialandenvironmentalissueswillbe
resolvedmoreeffectivelyandtakencareofattentivelybytherelevantbodies.However,to
achievesuchatimeconsuminggoalandtosimultaneouslybeskillfulatadvocacy,consciouslyI
havetocomprehendmuchmoreprofoundlyregardingtheknowledgeofpolicyandits
implementation,whichiscruciallyimportanttobetakenintoaccount.ReadingtheSUSIprogram
description,Iamgenuinelycuriousabouthowlocalgrassrootsactivismandcivicinitiativeare
practicedintheU.S.inresponsetosocialandenvironmentalissues,thus,ofcourse,inevitably
makingmemoredeeplyunderstandhoweffectivelythefederalgovernmentpoliciesare
implemented.Additionally,providingthereisanopportunityforme,Iwillbringbackthe
lessonslearnttoputintopracticeinbothclassroomenvironmentsbydiscussingwithfriendsand
participatinginsocialactivitiestoencouragemorepeopletoengageactivitiesdealingwith
socialandenvironmentalissuesinmyhomecountry.

Secondly,concerningthescopeofSocialWorkpractice,particularlyinpolicylevel,having
leadershipqualitiesistheforemostgoalIhavebeenpursuingthroughtheoriesinbooksand
throughpracticalexperiencesgainedfrommyinvolvementinbothclassactivitiesandcivic
engagement.Inordertoestablishthoseleadershipskills,notonlyhaveIbeenexposingmyself
toinclassactivitiessuchasteamworkandgroupdiscussion,butalsobeentakingpartinpublic
seminarsandworkshopssoastolearnfrommanyleadersfromvariouscivilsocietyand
governmentinstitutions.Inthisregard,Iamoftheopinionthatthefourweekacademicresidency
intheU.SthroughSUSIprogramwillsurelyprovidemeagreatdealofhandsonexperiences
regardingleadershipthroughauniqueopportunitytomeetcommunityleadersand
representativesfromnonprofitorganizations.Finallyyetimportantly,Iamconvincedthe
experiencesgainedduringtheprogramwillgivememoreinsightintothedifferencebetween
leadershippracticedintheU.S.andinCambodia.

Intermsofpersonaldevelopment,Iaimfortheenhancementofmyinterpersonalskillsandfora
deepunderstandingofculturaldiversity.Idoacknowledgethatskillsandknowledgehavingbeen
learntinclassareconsiderablyimportant.However,apotentialpersonisnotonlyabletoadapt
toworkingconditions,butisalsorequiredtocommunicateeffectivelywithpeopleandtobe
knowledgeableabouthowtobehaveinculturaldiversityproperlywithoutshowinganyprejudice,
stigmatization,anddiscrimination.Forthisreason,Ireallywanttoexposemyselftodiverse
learningenvironmentsandgroupsofpeopletolearnmoreaboutallthosedifferences.So,itis
thetimeformetoachievemygoalsthroughtheprogramandtocanputwhatIhavelearntand
understoodintopractice.
