The largest marine diesel engines can be mounted on resin chocks using Chockfast Orange (Philadelphia Resins) or
Epocast 36 (HA Springer). Resin Chocks can be used to realign an engine mounted on cast iron chocks if fretting has
taken place. If this is the case, then before re-chocking check both the bedplate and foundation plate for cracks which
must be chiselled and re-welded before casting the epoxy, as it is sensitive to high temperatures.
The surface pressure for the chock on a large two stroke engine is 4.41N/mm2, so the area of chocking will be greater than
that using cast iron.

The hull must be strong enough to take the weight of

the engine. A 12 cylinder 2 stroke engine with a bore
of 980 mm weighs over 2000 tonnes. The sketch
opposite shows the arrangement for the support of an
MAN B&W K98MCC engine, which is illustrated
below.

The photograph opposite shows the foundation plate before the

engine bedplate is lowered. The side chocks are welded in position,
but without the liners. Tapered wedges are in place, located midway
between the transverse girder positions.
The bedplate with crankshaft in situ is then lowered on to the
foundation plate. This engine is in two halves, bolted together at the
centre.

The alignment of the bedplate must be

checked both vertically and horizontally
using piano wire or optical methods. In
this particular case a piano wire is
stretched to a known value above each
side of the bedplate. The distance
between the bedplate top flange and the
wire is measured using a micrometer
device as shown. A red indicator light
shows when the top of the micrometer
is just touching the wire.

For the vertical alignment to be correct,

so that the output flange on the engine
flywheel is in alignment with the
propshaft flange the distance of the
bedplate flange from the wire is a
known value. The droop in the wire due
to its mass is taken into account.

To adjust the height of the bedplate jacks are used as shown

and the wedges moved accordingly.

Once the engine is correctly aligned the resin is poured, using foam rubber to form the moulds. Holes for the holding
down bolts are plugged, and if bolts are positioned prior to pouring the resin these must be greased to prevent the resin
sticking. If the ambient temperature is low, then space heaters must be used to bring the temperature to 21C. The area is
to be kept free from vibration from external sources whilst the resin is curing (24 - 48 hrs dependant on temperature). If
the resin is poured in two stages then the atmosphere must be kept free of oil (The engine manufacturer recommends that
no auxiliary engines are running). No metallic blocks or wedges are to be included in the chocking material.
Once the resin has set, the jacks/ wedges are removed. The holding down bolts are then tightened hydraulically and the
alignment rechecked.

The edge of the resin is chiselled flush with the bedplate. The side
chock liners are then hand fitted to an 80% contact area on a 100:1
taper between the side chock and the bedplate. These are then
knocked in simultaneously and locked in position using the set bolts
as shown in the photograph.

Liners are also hand fitted between the end chocks (situated at the aft
end of the longitudinal girder). Once these have been fitted the end
chock bolts are positioned and tightened.

engine seating. Note thickness of the foundation plate.

chocks. The side chocks are in way of each transverse girder.
