5th Grade
Dear 5th Grade Parents and Students,
I would like to take the time to introduce myself, my name is Mrs. Oliver, and I am the
Fine Arts Specialist at your childs school. I am here to give your children the
opportunity to expand their musical education. This year they will be learning how to
play the SOPRANO RECORDER. In music, the Soprano recorder, is the first basic
instrument that introduces general music skills to elementary students.
Every year, 5th graders from across El Paso are invited to participate in a live classical
concert alongside the El Paso Symphony Orchestra. EPSO has partnered with Carnegie
Hall, in New York City, to introduce a curriculum for music students which allow them to
play recorders and sing along with the orchestra during a live concert. The concert will
be held in February and more information will be provided at a later date.
It is my recommendation that you purchase your own recorder. Below are a list of
stores where you may purchase one, prices range from $5.00-$10.00. We do have a
limited number of recorders to loan to students. Although they are clean, they have
been used before. Those students borrowing a school recorder will be held
responsible if it is lost or damaged and will be required to return it at the end of
the course. Please inform me if you will be needing a recorder, so I can provide you
with a rental card agreement. I suggest you buy them as soon as possible, as all
elementary schools in the district will be getting recorders.
I look forward to a successful year of recorder music!
