Case Study 1

Subject: Competency and Performance Management

Prepared by: Tanaya Devasthali

Case
PeopleFirst recently worked with a fast-growing international retailer Stylebing to redesign its
employee performance management system (PMS).

Stylebing had been hugely successful to date, expanding from its country of origin Italy to build
profitable operations across Europe, Africa, the Middle East and Asia. The foundation for this
success was a differentiated product and service offering, underpinned by a distinctive family
culture and branding.

But some problems were beginning to crop up across the stores. The sales were going down
and a lot of complaints regarding employees bad behaviors were reported. Employees were
reportedly dissatisfied and frustrated because of the way their performance was being
evaluated.

Stylebings existing performance management system was overly complex, time consuming to
use and inconsistently applied across the stores. The client believed that an objective and
transparent EPM system would be crucial to maintaining company standards, and staff attitudes
and behaviors at their historically high levels.

The retailer sought to have the performance management system (PMS) redesigned, simplified
and re-launched. The new system would be used by several thousand staff within some 200
retail outlets across continents.

Stylebing?
