Kenya is a stable country and is relatively free of internal and external strife. Kenyans are
friendly and very receptive of visitors. As such, Kenya offers the best opportunities for access to
places of interest. Kenya, perhaps more than any other location in Africa affords the greatest
opportunities for viewing of wildlife and the greatest opportunities to interact with a variety of
tribal cultures. Wildlife in Kenya are plentiful and easily seen. Elevations in Kenya range from
sea level to 17,084 feet on Mount Kenya. This affords opportunities to an amazing variety of
ecosystems. What follows is a list of locations that we believe offer the best opportunities for
wildlife viewing and cultural experiences. Any or all of the locations may be incorporated into
your itinerary (depending on length of stay in-country).

Nairobi National Park: This is the oldest park in Kenya

and is located adjacent to the city. The park contains a
variety of ungulates including impala, kongoni, giraffe
and zebra. The park is also home to lion and rhino. Given
the parks location and wildlife population this makes for
some unique photo opportunities, making it possible to
photograph wildlife with the Nairobi city skyline in the
background.

The Karen Blixen Museum: This is the former home of

Karen Blixen, author of Out of Africa. For fans of the
book and movie, this is a location not to be missed.
While the museum is just her home and belongings, it
offers a very real feeling of what her life her must have
been like.

LODGING OPTIONS: There are a number of lodging options in Nairobi. The Norfolk; located
away from downtown and next to the University of Nairobi, this is the oldest hotel in Nairobi,
and one of the more expensive. The Stanley Hotel; Second oldest Hotel in Nairobi and full of
historic photos. Located in the heart of downtown. The Hilton; also downtown, and typically
Hilton. The Intercontinental; downtown and also a very western style hotel. The Serena; outside
the downtown area, with lush garden grounds. The Safari Park; outside of town this is a large
hotel/resort facility with many restaurants, golf course, tennis, shops, swimming and nightly
shows. For very upscale options we recommend either Ngong House or House of Wayne, both
small intimate and romantic.

LODGING OPTIONS: There are several very good
camps and lodges in Samburu. Most recommended is
Larsens Camp. This is a small camp of only 16 tents,
each with a view of the Ewaso NGiro River. It is also an
upscale camp and is a bit more expensive than other camps. Intrepids Camp; also on the river, but
a larger camp of 28 tents. Both tented camps have walk-in tents complete with bathroom facili-
ties. Serena Lodge and Samburu Lodge; both are on the river and are similar in room styles. The
Sopa Lodge; this is a new lodge having opened last year. However it is a long distance from the
river where wildlife tend to congregate. The views here are spectacular, but the drive to the river is
about 45 minutes. There is only one lodge in Shaba, the Sarova. It is a very nice lodge on the
river, with a large pool.

El Karama Ranch: This is a working ranch of over 14,000 acres engaged in the raising of cattle
and horses. The ranch is also home to a large variety of wildlife, including zebra, giraffe, gazelle,
impala and kongoni. Although not as populace, there are lion, leopard, hyena, baboon and
elephant. On El Karama, you can view wildlife while walking on the ranch with an El Karama
guide. You can also do game drives on the ranch with your WildTrek guide. At El Karama you
stay in a very small, but very comfortable and well appointed tented camp. There are only six tents
and a group cottage for 6, and no other camps on the ranch, thus you have a wildlife experience
far removed from large groups of tourists.

LODGING OPTIONS: Serena Mountain Lodge: The

only tree hotel built on the slopes of Mount Kenya,
Mountain Lodge offers game viewing and panorama
mountain vistas along with the ancient rainforest. From
the lodge, guests can view elephant, buffalo, bushbuck
and birds that visit a waterhole outside the lodge. The
waterhole is lite, so you can view wildlife throughout the
night.

Mountain Lodge: For a true Kenya experience, this is a

great place to stay. While the lodge is a prime place to
begin a Mt. Kenya hike, this lodge is a favored spot for
weekend holidays for Kenyans. Here you can meet and socialize with locals. The hotel is a bit
stark and not up to the standards of the tourist lodges, but it is comfortable, good food and very
nice grounds. On weekends there is a band. From here you can visit a traditional Kikuyu village.
Most Kikuyu have adopted a western lifestyle, this small village is one of the few left that main-
tain a traditional lifestyle. Here you will meet the residents and participate in their daily life
activities. It is also possible here to visit the Mau Mau caves. This was the location used by the
Mau Mau during the rebellion to organize raids against the British Colonial Government. The
caves are located on the side of Mount Kenya and hiking is the only access to the caves.

Mount Kenya Safari Club: Originally the retreat of movie star and Club founder, William
Holden, the Clubs illustrious former members have included Winston Churchill and Bing
Crosby. For those who wish to spend time relaxing at the Club, there are many recreational activi-
ties available: horseback riding, golf, croquet, a putting green, a bowling green, table tennis,
swimming, a beauty salon, a wildlife orphanage and much more. This is a great location to
include in the middle of an itinerary to give yourself a day to relax.

Aberdare National Park
Located in the central highlands, the park is a high
altitude alpine moist tropical forest. In this park you stay
at one of two lodges where you can view wildlife that
visit waterholes in front of the lodge. The waterhole is
lighted allowing for wildlife viewing throughout the
night. Elephant, cape buffalo, rhino, bushbuck, hyena
and leopard regularly frequent the waterholes at night.
There are also many birds that can be seen.
LODGING OPTIONS: There are only two lodging
options here, The Ark and Treetops. Treetops is the more
famous of the two, but unfortunately the lodge has not
been renovated in many years and it shows. Until the
lodge is updated, we do not recommend staying here.
The Ark Lodge is located on a natural waterhole and
saltlick at about 7500 in elevation. Here you can view
wildlife from platforms located both inside and outside
the lodge facility. If you stay longer than a single night it
is possible to travel via 4-wheel drive vehicle higher into
the park to around 10,000 where you
can see the high altitude moorlands,
several species of primates and hike to
several spectacular waterfalls.

Lake Nakuru National Park
Located in the Great Rift Valley, this is the only national
park in Africa created as a sanctuary for birds. There are
over 400 species in this one small park. The lake is most
famous for its population of greater and lesser flamingo
which can number in the millions. The park is also home
to a variety of mammalian species, including the rare
Rothschilds giraffe. The park also has a small population
of lion and leopard. Most notable in the park is the white
rhino. These have been reintroduced to the park through
a cooperative program between the Kenya Wildlife
Service and the government of South Africa. There is a
large population of baboon and a small population of the
more difficult to locate colobus monkey.
LODGING OPTIONS: There are only two lodges in the
Park, Lake Nakuru Lodge and Lion Hill Lodge. Lake
Nakuru Lodge is the older of the two lodges is comfort-
able and has great views, but lacks the amenities of Lion
Hill. Lion Hill was recently renovated
and all the rooms remodeled. Most
rooms have views of the lake. Each
evening there is traditional Kikuyu
dancing around the campfire before
dinner.

Lakes Bogoria & Boringo
These two lakes in the Great Rift Valley are close together
but are very different ecologically. Lake Bogoria is a
shallow soda lake ringed by hot springs. Lake Boringo is a
deeper fresh water lake. Both areas have populations of
wildlife but the population numbers are not high. Both
lakes have extensive avian species (around 450 species).
Lake Boringo has a large population of hippo. The lakes
are little frequented by tourist groups, making for a more
tourist free experience.
LODGING OPTIONS: We recommend the Lake Bogo-
ria Hotel. A spa hotel, Lake Bogoria hotel is located
inside Lake Bogoria National Reserve, famous for its
numerous geysers and springs. The hotel has 23 private
cozy cottages. The lodge is the only naturally heated
health spa in Kenya.

with WildTrek Safaris! is the Elsamere Conservation Center. This is wildlife
research station which was the home of Joy and George
Adamson. Joy was best known for her paintings of the
peoples of East Africa (on display in the National Museum in
Nairobi) and for her series of books on the life of the lioness Elsa,
Born Free and Living Free. Their home is now a research station
which hosts researchers from all over the world. Guests staying at
Elsamere will have opportunities to meet with researchers and
graduate students conducting research and have a family style
dinner with the researchers and staff in the main house. There are
also two tourist lodges, the Lake Naivasaha Country Club and
Naivasha Simba Lodge. The Country Club is the older of the two
and and has a very colonial period feel. The Simba Lodge is only a
couple years old and caters mostly to conferences.

Kariandusi Prehistoric Site: Located north of the town of

Naivasha, this is a site maintained by the National Museums of
Kenya. The site is one of the older excavations made by Louis
Leakey. It is a small site but many of the artifacts that were found
were left in place under protective cover. The guides here are
knowledgeable and eager to talk with visitors. The museum here is very small and does not have a
great deal to offer, as most artifacts and graphic information are at the excavation sites themselves.

Tsavo National Park - East & West
Located between Nairobi and the coast, Tsavo is the
largest park in Kenya. There are both advantages and
disadvantages to the use of this location. While Tsavo is
the largest park, it is one of the least visited by tourists.
This means that you will be able to view wildlife with
little interference from other tourist groups. The park is
little visited due to vastness of the park which allows the
wildlife a great range and as such can be somewhat diffi-
cult to locate. Tsavo is best known for its large elephant
herds and black mane lions. It was here that the infamous
Maneaters of Tsavo reigned, two male lions that attacked
and killed many railroad workers in 1898, dragging them
from their tents at night. The book was made into the
movie Ghosts and the Darkness. Other species to be
seen here are zebra, giraffe, buffalo, gazelle, hippo and
baboons.
LODGING OPTIONS: Because this park has fewer
visitors, midrange lodging options are limited. Several
luxury camps are available, call for
rates. Tsavo West options are limited
to the Kilanguni Lodge. It is a very
comfortable lodge with great views

Mombasa: Shimba Hills National Reserve: Located just

west of the South beach this is a small park with a
number of antelope, buffalo, waterbuck reedbuck, hyena,
giraffe, elephant and baboon. It is also the only park in
Kenya where it is possible to see the rare sable antelope.

CULTURAL & HISTORICAL OPPORTUNITIES:

Lamu: Lamu is a historic mix of Arab and Swahili
cultures. Although tourism is increasing, the cultures
have not been affected dramatically. Here much of the
traditional Swahili dress is maintained. Activities in Lamu
include visits to the Lamu Museum, rated as one of the
most interesting small museums in all of East Africa. Manda Island and Takwa Ruins. Here are
the remains of a Swahili city which flourished between 15th and 17th centuries and was then
abandoned. Day visit to Pat Island where there are a number of historical sites, including the
towns of Pat, Siyu, Mtangawanda and Faza. The trip to the Island is via a Dhow. This area sees
little tourism and as a result is little changed from the time when they were Swahili city-states.

Malindi: Cultural opportunities here include a tour of the Gedi Ruins, an ancient Swahili city
dating back to the 1200s. The tour will be lead by a guide from The National Museums of Kenya.
You can also choose to visit the Vasco de Gama Navigational Pillar, and the church of St. Francis
Xaviar.

Mombasa: Cultural opportunities here inlcude a visit to the Swahili Cultural Center, where
students of Swahili descent learn ancient crafts, art and music. Historical opportunities include a
guided tour of Fort Jesus, built by the Portuguese in 1590 to defend the port. The Fort is now
part of the National Museums of Kenya, and has been restored and turned into an excellent
museum. Following a tour of the Fort, you can take a walking tour of the Old Port of Mombasa,
visiting historical homes and government buildings, some dating back to the late 1400s.

Recreational Opportunities: We highly recommend that
our clients consider ending their safari with a few days at
the South Beach. Ernest Hemingway was a frequent
visitor to the Kenya coast, and described it as ....this
cannot be less than natural beauty, the endless sand, the
reefs, the lot are completely unmatched in the world.
Here there are seemingly endless white sand beaches,
clear water and
protected reefs.

Restaurants are
plentiful and
varied with
excellent food.
Activities on the coast include; snorkeling, diving, fish-
ing, glass bottom boat tours of the reef, sailing on Arab
dhows, windsurfing and bicycling. In the evening most
hotels along the beach have either live bands, stage shows
or discos, providing endless opportunities to relax and
enjoy before begining the long trip home.
