Lets read ?

Read the following text and then answer the questions about it.

Are you feeling the heat?

Polar bears live in the extremely cold regions of the Arctic, near the North Pole. Nothing seems to
threaten their existence, but those animals are actually in great danger.
Reviso 1
Our climate is changing. Global warming, the increase in world temperatures due to a greenhouse
effect from the burning of fossil fuels, is not a problem for the future. It is happening now. And it has
terrible consequences.

The effects of global warming are evident. Glaciers are disappearing. Oceans are rising. Extreme
weather is getting more frequent. Natural disasters like heat waves, droughts, floods, storms, even
tsunamis are getting more common now.

In the Arctic the effects are dramatic and disastrous. Scientists say that Arctic is warming at least
twice as fast as the rest of the globe, so the Arctic ice is melting. The melting of the ice results in a serious
loss of habitat for the areas wildlife. Because seabirds and mammals like seals, walruses and polar bears
are gradually losing their habitat, they are threatened with extinction. And extiction is forever.

(Adapted from Environment: Global Warming Threatens Arctic Wildlife, by Danielle Knight, Inter Press Service, English News
Wire, May 11, 1998; Our World Protecting the Environment, by Andrew Bennetto & Healther Jones, SBS Publishing, 2000)
