1 Long Exam 2 September 3, 2010

I. (2 pts each) Justified TRUE or FALSE. Justify answers clearly, concisely and completely.

1. The functions y1 = x + 5, y2 = x + 5x, y3 = x 1, y4 = x2 form a linearly dependent set.
2. If y1 and y2 are solutions to the DE 2y 00 5y 0 3y = 0, then y = c1 y1 + c2 y2 , for any c1 , c2 R, is
its general solution.
3. Given the DE (D3 3D2 4D)y = 2 8e4x , then its particular solution yp has the form A + Be4x .

II. (2 pts each) Supply what is asked.

1. Give a polynomial function whose 15th derivative is 8.
2. Give a linear differential operator with constant coefficients and with least order (in factored form)
that annihilates 10xe2x 5ex x cos 2x 9ex sin 2x.

III. (7 pts each) Solve the following DEs or IVPs. (Determine the general solution for the DEs and the specific
solutions for the IVPs.)
1. (D2 6D + 9)y = 6x2 + 2 12e3x .
2. 2t2 y 00 + 3ty 0 y = 0, given that y1 (t) = t1 is a solution and t > 0.
3. x2 y 00 2xy 0 + 2y = x ln x, given that x and x2 are 2 solutions of the corresponding homogeneous DE.
4. y 00 2y 0 + y = x1 ex , y(1) = 0, y 0 (1) = 1.

IV. (8 pts) Solve the following problem completely.

1. A 128-lb weight is attached to a spring having a spring constant of 64 lb/ft. The weight is started
in motion with no initial velocity by displacing it 6 inches above the equilibrium position and by
simultaneously applying to the weight an external force F (t) = 8 sin 4t. Assuming no air resistance,
find the displacement of the weight from the equilibrium position at subsequent times.
