Course Syllabus
2017-2018

Course Description
The goal of health education is to teach health concepts, to assess risks, to consider potential consequences, and to
make healthy decisions. Health education in the 6 th grade will cover topics related to physical, social, emotional, and
cognitive health. Through group activities, individual class work, lecture, class discussions, journal writing and the use of
technology, students will acquire the skills necessary to make healthy decisions in the areas of nutrition, substance
misuse prevention, healthy relationships, and stress management.

Learning Targets
When students have completed 6th GRADE HEALTH, they will be able to:
1. Explain the basic nutritional guidelines.
2. Write an assessment of your own personal values regarding nutrition.
3. Compare and contrast two food groups.
4. I can identify at least 3 ways bullying impacts others physically, emotionally and cognitively.
5. I can explain at least three strategies I can use to decrease bullying.
6. I can explain the difference between internal and external pressures.
7. I can explain at least one way I could respond to a typical pressure scenario.
8. I can identify at least one motivator (strength, interest, activity, relationship, etc.) that can help in making healthy
choices.
9. I can explain at least 3 of the physical changes that happen in the body and why they happen.
10. I can explain at least 2 strategies someone who is going through puberty can use to take care of themselves
physically, and at least 2 strategies for taking of oneself emotionally.
11. I can explain how decisions impact myself and the people around me.

Grading Scheme
Test/Quizzes/Projects- 30%
Class Participation- 30% (see Positive Participation Rubric)
Google Classroom/ Homework/Classwork- 40% (see Google Classroom Weekly Grading Rubric)
