Strange case of the missing wardrobe

The best-laid holiday plans can be ruined by a suitcase going astray as Brenda Parry
discovered on a recent trip to Sicily
A woman without baggage. She doesn't exist, I hear the menfolk cry. Metaphorically, I'm sure
she doesnt. But if my recent holiday nightmare is anything to go by, I am convinced there are
increasing numbers of holidaymakers arriving at destinations minus their suitcases.

That was all very well. But, for once in my life, I had taken great care in assembling my
holiday wardrobe. I hadnt been to the sun for some time and I was determined to make the most
of it.
Unfortunately, Mediterranean resorts do not seem to cater for anybody over an English
size 10.

New knickers? That was not so difficult but when I washed them out and put them on the
windowsill to dry, they blew away.

My insurance cover stipulated that if luggage failed to arrive within 24 hours I could
spend 75 on necessities. Big deal. I bought a pair of Italian sandals. They looked good but
were crippling

MyTravel, which organised my holiday, apologised to passengers whose luggage arrived
late or not at all. The problems were down to a system failure at Manchester airport, said a
spokesman. The airport installed a new baggage handling system, which had teething
problems. All seems to be well now.

A In the event, fellow travellers received their cases after about five days. Mine did not
arrive at all and could not be traced.
B When I arrived back at Manchester, I was determined to find it. Although there was no
formal record of it, a customs man told me to check the many piles of luggage that were
lying about.
C I couldnt dress for dinner. The silk shirt did enhance the trousers I had travelled in, but I
had been wearing them for four days. The linen dress didn't look too hot with white legs
my instant tan was in my case.
D When I flew to Sicily earlier this summer, there was such chaos at Manchester airport that
I feared for my suitcase the minute it trundled up the belt and out of sight. I was right to be
sceptical. On my arrival in Sicily there was no sign of my distinctive purple case.
E At size 14, I don't fit into this category. I did find a silk shirt that fitted and a linen dress,
but then I was reduced to some mens shorts and T-shirt. What with the Daffy Duck navy
sun hat, I felt a real fright. Oh well, I thought, how about a swim?
F I spent the first night frantically telephoning airport officials trying to find my suitcase but
without success.
G I told him what my case looked like and five minutes later he found it. It was just over
there. It never left the airport, he said wearily.
H My suitcase never did arrive. We were told various stories: They are coming on the ferry
from Malta; They arrived at the airport last night
I A nice bath or a cooling shower seemed to be the answer to everything. But I had neither a
bath robe, nor even a sexy nightie. I just wanted to curl up and die.
J This is always happening, it will turn up, I and a dozen other hapless travellers were
assured. The next advice I remember was: You can buy essentials on your insurance, if it
doesnt turn up within 24 hours."
K Our hotels best feature was the swimming pool but yours truly had neither a swimsuit nor
beach towel.

Stressed teachers offered their own lifestyle manager

Teachers are to get their own lifestyle managers to be paid for by the taxpayer who sort
out household chores, book outings and holidays and can even arrange moving home in an
attempt to make life in the classroom less stressful.
Previously the preserve of highly paid executives too busy to attend to domestic tasks, the
service will be designed to help harassed teaching staff devote more time and concentration to
pupils.
A phone call will put a teacher in touch with a lifestyle manager who can find a
babysitter, a builder or a gardener, or even come up with ideas for Christmas presents.
The service will be provided at a number of schools in central London in a pilot project
later this year. If successful, it is expected to become a common feature in teachers' employment
contracts across the country.
Councillor Tim Joiner, the head of education on Westminster council, said the authority
was launching the 32,000 trial scheme in the hope of easing the recruitment crisis in the
borough's schools.
He said: If office workers have an emergency at home, they can sit at their desks and sort
it out over the phone. Teachers, however, are stuck in front of their classes. Those worries just
add to what is already a stressful job.
Inspired by the success of similar ventures in America, a number of lifestyle
management companies have launched here over the past five years, including tenUK, Your
Concierge and Urang.
Westminster council has more than a quarter of its 1,200 teaching posts unfilled and hopes
that the scheme will help attract staff. The service would also reduce the need for supply
teachers called in to cover when permanent staff had to take time off to sort out domestic crises.
Mr Joiner said: Teaching in an inner-city school can be very hard, so we are looking for
ways to help balance work with personal lives. If we can ease the burden on teachers just a little
bit, that will ultimately benefit the children.

New insight on Churchill's view of Hungary

16. Internationally renowned historian John Lukcs visited Budapest to deliver a lecture at the
British Embassy entitled Churchill and Hungary, detailing the little-known details of Sir
Winston Churchills knowledge of Hungary and his concerns for the country before,
during and after the Second World War.
17. Lukcs, who has written several of the most authoritative volumes on the life and work of
the legendary British Prime Minister, unearthed new information during recent research
for a forthcoming Churchill book.
18. The historian, who left Hungary in 1946 to settle in the US, described Churchills
encyclopedic knowledge of history as astonishing and said he had been excited to
discover in a book written by a then young Churchill on the history of his family, entire
pages devoted to Hungary, in particular the 1706 Rkczi revolution.
19. Lukcs said Churchills descriptions of Hungarian historical events and personalities were
not only accurate, but perfectly acceptable to Hungarians who are otherwise very
sensitive towards foreign criticism.
20. Churchill also voiced objections to the break-up of the Austro-Hungarian Empire as a
minority member of the Lloyd George administration in 1919, Lukcs revealed. The new
states of Eastern Europe will be crushed between Bolshevik Russia and a resurgent
Germany, Lukcs recalled Churchill warning a cabinet meeting.
21. Alone among the Western statesmen of the 1920s Churchill believed there were two very
bad treaties which had to be revised Versailles and Trianon, Lukcs said, adding that in
a statement incomparable to any other made by a Western leader of the era, he wrote in a
1930 article, There are two territorial problems in Europe that demand revision one is
Danzig, the other Transylvania.
22. The British leader even had the audacity to correct both Josef Stalin and Franklin
Roosevelt over Hungary, Lukcs said, when Stalin told Churchill, We are bordering on
Hungary, to which Churchill replied, No, Russia does not border on Hungary, and
when he wrote in a memorandum to Roosevelt Hungary is not a Balkan country, it is a
Central European Country.
23. According to Lukcs, Churchill even foresaw the eventual collapse of Communism and
the break-up of the Soviet Empire, recalling a conversation between Churchill and French
statesman General Charles De Gaulle in Paris shortly after the citys liberation in late
1944.
24. When De Gaulle expressed his alarm at the US allowing the Soviet Union to devour
Eastern Europe like a hungry wolf among sheep, Churchill pointed out that after the
meal would have to come the digestion. Churchill knew that the Soviet Union would not
be able to digest the Eastern European countries, Lukcs said.
