Technology for Health Sciences is a course designed to integrate various essential
computer skills in the health sciences for each level grade student. The goal is to use
computers as a tool and delivery system to enhance learning and to empower students to
Course Description embrace content through technological means. Students will learn to use open source
software and general design principles to create effective, content driven materials to
represent ones understanding. Students ARE REQUIRED to use a Windows based
computer system to complete projects using word-processing, presentations,
spreadsheets, and interactive classroom technologies.

There is no specific text for this class. All required reading materials will be supplied by the
teacher in class and on the Weebly class website (as listed above). All work will be done
on Internet-based software that can be retrieved from any computer with Internet access.
As a back-up, please also have the following for class as well:
Course Materials USB / Flashdrive (8 GB or smaller is more than enough)
Google Drive Account (one is provided through NHPS)
Three ring binder or Notebook
Black or Blue Pen

Course Software All of the software required for this course will be available at Creed School
Computers are available to all students within the school building at designated
areas.

Apply instructional and visual design principles to the creation of materials to


represent knowledge and understanding.
Create and edit a basic text document using Google Docs & Microsoft Word
processing softwares
Track and manipulate numerical data using Google Spreadsheet and Microsoft
Excel softwares
Create an informative presentation using Google Presentation and Microsoft
PowerPoint
Obtain a well-rounded understanding of technologies available and their purposes
Course Objectives and uses.
Utilize various technology mediums to support foundational softwares in the
Microsoft Office Suite, & Google Drive
Utilize and apply Microsoft Office Suite concepts and uses in a student-lead
approach accompanied by in class tutorials.
Practice inquiry-based learning through interactive classroom technologies to
broaden ones understanding of cyber concepts and literacy.
Explain how the Internet and e-mail work to facilitate global communication.
Identify and cite appropriate resources for accreditation to original sources.
Students are required to come to class every day and on time. It is essential that students
are present in class to receive direction and feedback on the design of their projects, remain
on track for their comprehension of computer application topics and terminology, and have
access to receive help from the teacher in areas needed. There will be a reduction in a
students grade if attendance is abused and continuously late*. If a student is absent, they
need to email the instructor as soon as possible as well as check the weebly class website
Attendance Policy for any work missed during class and expected work to be completed for the following
class.

*Example of grade reduction regarding attendance: 20 classes a marking period = 20 points


total. Each absent (unless proven to be excused) will result in 1 point removed. If a total of 2
unexcused absences, than student will receive 18/20 points for attendance for the marking
period.

Grading
If any assignment is returned after 2 full school days since being absent, the assignment(s)
will not be graded and will result in a zero for each assignment that is applicable.
**It is up to each student to be responsible for all work that is missed

Students are to follow all of the rules outlined in the student handbook.

Merits/Demerits: When applicable, notice will be given for what is received based on the
Merit/Demerit policy protocols provided at the beginning of the school year. See the
Merit/Demerit Manager for further questions.
Tardiness: Follow the school policy and bring a pass to class (no verbal passes will be
accepted).
Homework: C ANNOT be made up if late homework is due the day it is expected and
assigned unless otherwise noted by the teacher. If you are absent on the due date, it must
Behavior Policy be returned the next class period for credit. Also refer to the school policy as well.
Projects: ONLY due on the assigned day whether or not you are in school. If you are
absent, please e-mail me your completed project or share it with me on Google Drive in
your designated folder. If it is an oral presentation and your partners(s) present without you
and you have not made previous arrangements with me, your grade for presentation will be
a zero. The written portion of the project will be graded according to the rubric provided.

NO CELL PHONES OR PERSONAL DEVICES OF ANY KIND ARE PERMITTED FOR


USE IN THE CLASSROOM.

To ensure the protection of the equipment and the safety of all students, please comply with
the following rules and procedures:

No food, drinks, or other edible items in the computer lab.


When finished, please log out of the computer after making sure all work is saved
properly, programs are closed and log off procedures are followed.
Computer Lab When leaving the computer lab, clean up your area, push in your chair, and leave
Expectations the keyboard and mouse organized neatly on the desk.
Any other devices other than school equipment should not be plugged in or utilized
while the class is taking place. These devices should be put away, securely and not
out during class time.

IF ANY OF THE ABOVE IS ABUSED, IT IS THE TEACHERS RIGHT TO EITHER DISPOSE IN THE TRASH ANY FOOD, DRINK OR GUM ITEMS IN
ADDITION TO RETRIEVING AND TURNING IN ANY CELL PHONES OR ELECTRONIC DEVICES TO THE FLOOR DEAN.
The instruction of this course is driven by the belief that the best learning happens through
the authentic application of skills and concepts. It will rely heavily on hands-on experience
Philosophy of of technology while completing several projects, which can be used for future purposes,
Instruction such as a student or personal digital portfolio. For this to be effective, the students will also
be responsible for being active participants in the course and to contribute to the
experiences of the class to a high degree.
