Assassination attempt

In September 2000, Dawood tracked down Rajan in Bangkok. Sharad, used his links with
Mumbai-based hotelier Vinod and A. Mishra to track down Rajan in Bangkok,[9] Dawood's
aide Chhota Shakeel then led the hit. Posing as a pizza delivery man they gunned down the
trusted Rajan hitman Rohit Varma and his wife.[9] However their aim of killing Rajan
failed, with Rajan making a dare-devil escape through the hotel's roof and fire-escape. He
then recovered in a hospital and slipped away to evade capture.

Dawood Ibrahim confirmed the attack on the telephone to Rediff.com, saying Rajan tried to
escape by jumping out of the window of the first-floor room where he was attacked. He,
however, broke his back in the fall and was taken to hospital.[10]

This failed assassination attempt proved costly for Dawood. Chhota Rajan's associates
tracked down and shot dead Vinod in 2001 in Mumbai, as well as Sunil Soans another
Dawood associate. Both Vinod and Sunil had provided information to Dawood's associates of
Rajan's whereabouts.[9]

While the killings of Vinod and Sunil Soans did not significantly disrupt D-Company, on 19
January 2003, Chhota Rajan's associates then gunned down Sharad Dawood's chief
finance manager and money-laundering agent at the India Club in Dubai.[9]

This brazen killing was emblematic of the shift of power between Dawood and Rajan.
Not only was the execution in a very public setting, it was at a location that Dawood
considered his operational backyard. Intelligence reports have suggested that Sharad death
was a crippling blow to D-Company, since much financial and monetary information of the
crime syndicate operations managed by Sharad was never fully recovered by Dawood

Its obvious Chhota Rajan eliminated many men working in India for Karachi Based underworld don Dawood Ibrahim.

While surfing through internet, I noticed that a number of websites that exposed links of Indian politicians to Karachi
Based underworld don Dawood Ibrahim have disappeared from the internet. Its like they have slowly been removed.

MUMBAI: Opposition leader Eknath Khadse alleged in the legislative assembly on Thursday that
Sharad Pawar and his wife had flown with tainted DB Realty boss Shahid Balwa to Dubai last year.
Khadse said that the plane used for the flight was owned by Eon Aviation, a subsidiary of the DB
Realty Group. Balwa was the group's managing director till his arrest in the 2G spectrum scam in
February.

The BJP leader said he has records from Air Traffic Control to prove his charge. He claimed that DB
chairman Vinod Goenka, ICC CEO Haroon Lorgat, BCCI president Shashank Manohar and his wife
Varsha, and cricket administrator I S Bindra were also on the plane. Khadse also claimed to have
evidence to prove that Pawar flew to Jaipur, along with others, on an Eon Aviation plane on May 16
last year. Khadse said that Praful Patel, another NCP minister in the Union cabinet, used Eon Aviation
planes on at least four occasions last year. Patel flew to Bangalore accompanied by Balwa and
Goenka on April 10 last year.

The other occasions mentioned were January 20 to Tirupati, February 1 to Nagpur and February 5 to
Delhi. The opposition leader claimed that Dilip Deshmukh, brother of former state chief minister and
senior Congress leader Vilasrao Deshmukh, accompanied Patel during the February 1 flight. The
name of NCP's state rural development minister Jayant Patil was also mentioned. Khadse claimed
that the politician flew to Delhi on a Eon plane on January 7, 2010. The leader also provided details
of an Eon chartered flight taken by builder Jayant Shah to Nanded. Shah was in the news recently for
being close to former CM Ashok Chavan.

Khadse said that while there was no harm in renting out chartered planes, clarification of the nature
of travel must be provided in these cases. The leader also sought explanation on flights where Balwa
accompanied NCP leaders. The NCP was quick to rubbished Khadse's claims. Party legislator
Jitendra Awhad said the planes were owned by the firm and not by Balwa alone. He filed a counter-
charge claiming that BJP leader Nitin Gadkari and Sena's executive chief Uddhav Thackeray had also
flown on Eon planes.

Khadse also demanded police action against Vinod Goenka. "Goenka was seen hugging Dawood at
the marriage of the latter's daughter in CDs aired by news channels. If film financier Bharat Shah
could be put behind bars after an audio tape regarding his telephonic conversation with Dawood was
released, why should similar action not be taken against Goenka," he asked. Khadse also sought to
know the status of action against Shah himself. The leader also sought an inquiry into the alleged
links of certain police officers with the underworld (he named the Pujari gang).

There is no respite for Sharad Pawar. Just as he was trying to counter the onslaught launched by anti-
corruption crusader G.R. Khairnar, another official this time a deputy inspector general of police has
levelled serious allegations of underworld links against the Maharashtra chief minister. And unlike in
Khairnar's case, dig Ulhas Joshi's sensational charges are framed in an affidavit submitted last
fortnight to the Bombay High Court.
Joshi, 49, charged that Pawar, when he was Union defence minister and as chief minister, has
consistently sought to protect the interests of three well-known gangsters associated with underworld
don Dawood Ibrahim Suresh 'Pappu' Kalani, currently atada detainee in Maharashtra, Hitendra
Thakur, who was recently released from tada detention after the police failed to file charges in time,
and his elder brother Jayendra 'Bhai' Thakur, who is now lodged in the capital's Tihar Jail.
Kalani and the Thakurs had terrorised a vast semi-urban and rural area bordering Bombay through
their armed goons. They had also made fortunes through smuggling, extortion, and real estate
racketeering. Thane district's coastal Vasai-Virar region was the Thakur brothers' fiefdom, while the
small scale industry town of Ulhasnagar was under Kalani's control. Then, both Kalani and Hitendra
Thakur were elected to the state Assembly on Congress(I) tickets in the 1990 elections during Pawar's
earlier tenure as chief minister.
Sharad Pawar: Confronted with a new set of allegations
It was only when two years ago, Pawar's political rivals, Union Home Minister S.B. Chavan and then
chief minister Sudhakar Naik, moved to break the gangsters' domination of the important Thane
district adjacent to Bombay, that both Kalani and Hitendra Thakur were j ailed under tada in late
1992. Subsequently, the Congress!I) was forced to expel both MLAs, while Pawar publicly
acknowledged that giving them party tickets had been "a mistake".
It was to Thane district that Joshi came in September 1989, first as DCP in Thane city, then from
August 1991 as sp, Thane Rural, and eventually dig, Konkan Range, four months later. But unlike
Khairnar or the former municipal commissioner S.S. Tinaikar, who have unimpeachable service
records, Joshi's was a controversial tenure in Thane till he was finally transferred to Nagpur as dig,
state reserve police, in June last year.
Days after he was sent packing from the coveted Thane posting, Joshi filed a writ petition in the
Bombay High Court seeking to quash an Anti-Corruption Bureau (acb) inquiry against him. A
'discreet' ACB probe against Joshi was already on when Pawar took over as chief minister in March
1992, which was eventually converted into a formal inquiry into the discrepancy between Joshi's
income and his declared assets, which, according to a top government source, supposedly included
real estate properties all over Maharashtra. Joshi alleged the ACB inquiry was instigated by "political
bigwigs" and senior police officers in order to stop him from taking action against "politically strong
underworld dons".
But while admitting Joshi's petition and staying the acb inquiry, a division bench of the Bombay High
Court ruled that the allegations of mala fide would not be taken seriously unless the politicians
concerned were named and some proof presented in court. Last fortnight, Joshi named the
Maharashtra chief minister and Bapusaheb Thite, a close political associate of Pawar, who was
minister of state for home in Naik's ministry and was recently elected to the Lok Sabha from the
Pawar family borough of Baramati.
Joshi's Charges
Hitendra Thakur and Pappu Kalani are close associates of Sharad Pawar. Bhai Thakur (Hitendra's
elder brother) is a known underworld don and was a confidant of Dawood Ibrahim.
Thakur and Kalani were included in legislative committees as honourable representatives of the
Congress(I) in spite of their having been incarcerated for committing serious offences under TADA.
In February '93, Sharad Pawar asked the then chief minister Sudhakar Naik to give better, more
friendly treatment to Kalani during his police custody.The interest of the state was sacrificed for the
sake of the protection of criminal elements near and dear to Sharad Pawar.
Pawar's Defence
It is easy to establish that the allegations are false. He is trying to save himself from the Anti-
Corruption Bureau inquiry (investigating Joshi's disproportionate assets). This (Joshi's affidavit) is a
desperate action.
In Maharashtra, each and every elected member in the Assembly is put on a consultative committee.
Thakur and Kalani are still members of the urban development, and tribal and social welfare
committees even after being expelled from the Congress(I).
I have never talked to Sudhakar Naik about Pappu Kalani. I never talked to Babusaheb Thite
(minister of state for home under Naik) about giving security to Kalani. Security was given to Kalani
before I became chief minister.
Joshi charged that even when Pawar was Union Defence minister, he ensured "protection" for
underworld political figures by using Thite, and produced official correspondence addressed to him
(when he was dig, Kon-kan Range) by the then sp, Thane Rural, C. Prabhakar.
In the first letter dated August 11, 1992. Prabhakar informs Joshi that he had received a call from
Thite, and after a discussion of the activities of the Thakur gang and Kalani, he was asked to see the
minister in Bombay. In the second letter to Joshi, Prabhakar alleges that at the meeting in Mantralaya
on August 13, 1992. Thite demanded that proper police protection should be ensured for Kalani as the
latter carried clout with Pawar.
Inexplicably though, while Prabhakar wrote the first letter to Joshi just five days after he got Thite's
phone call, he took almost three months to write details of the more significant Mantralaya meeting
with the minister. The court will now have to judge the veracity of the letters after examining police
records and the official diary in the office of the SP. Thane Rural.
Even though the "proof beyond reasonable doubt" required in criminal cases is not necessary for
deciding on a writ petition-Joshi's petition seeks to stop an ACB inquiry, and not to establish anyone's
criminal guilt the hearings are likely to revive several controversies involving the dig.
The most curious of these is how Bhai Thakur, a close associate of underworld don Dawood Ibrahim,
was allowed to escape from Calcutta in December 1991 despite being wanted in connection with the
brutal murders committed at Vadrai village in Thane. Calcutta Police arrested him at Dum Dum
Airport when he tried to board a plane to Kathmandu.
Since Thakur was not wanted by the Bombay Police, the information was redirected to the Thane
police who, surprisingly, maintained that Thakur was no longer a wanted man.
Calcutta Police was forced to release Thakur hours after he was arrested, and he went to Dubai via
Kathmandu. Joshi was then the sp, Thane Rural. This incident has been detailed by the officer who
succeeded him as dig, S.S. Suradkar, in an affidavit filed in response to Joshi's writ petition.
Suradkar also refers to the Vadrai outrage, when a boat carrying silver ingots overturned off the
coastal village on April 30, 1991. The local Adivasis took away the silver, and Bhai Thakur's
