INTRODUCTION

1
As part of our B. Tech curriculum as prescribed by our university ,we were
supposed to do social service for a period of 10 days. We were in search of an
active organization which could provide us facility to do the same. It was then
that we came to know about the organization named SAI SANKARA SANTHI
KENDRAM which is a well recognized name in Kerala for social service. SAI
SANKARA SANTHI KENDRAM is a society formed by a group kind hearted
human beings. Sai Sankara Santhi Kendram is a social welfare organisation
working hard to serve the society by providing a helping hand to the
weak, unsupported sections of the society.Sai Sankara is an instrument to serve
mankind as exhorted by Sri Satya Sai Baba and Adi Sankaracharya.

SAI SANKAR SANTHI KENDRAM meets its working expenses from public. The
basic motive behind our visit to this organization was to give the inmates our
love, care and affection and also share our ideas with them for improving their
confidence . The social service activities were planned such that it should not
hurt emotions of the inmates SAI SANKAR SANTHI KENDRAM. As an addition
,we ourselves also wanted to understand the emotional trauma that they are
going through and become a helping hand for them atleast during the course
of our training.

OLD AGE HOME

3
Old age homes are meant for senior citizens who are unable to stay with their
families or are destitute. States in India such as Delhi, Kerala, Maharashtra and
West Bengal have developed good quality old age homes. These old age homes
have special medical facilities for senior citizens such as mobile health care
systems, ambulances, nurses and provision of well-balanced meals.

There are more than a thousand old age homes in India. Most of them offer
free accommodation. Some homes work on a payment basis depending on the
type and quality of services offered. Apart from food, shelter and medical
amenities, old age homes also provide yoga classes to senior citizens. Old age
homes also provide access to telephones and other forms of communication so
that residents may keep in touch with their loved ones. Some old age homes
have day care centres. These centres only take care of senior citizens during
the day.

For older people who have nowhere to go and no one to support them, old age
homes provide a safe haven. These homes also create a family like atmosphere
among the residents. Senior citizens experience a sense of security and
friendship when they share their joys and sorrows with each other.

14
EXPERIENCE OF WORK DONE

15
It was a touching experience for me after I had an interactive session with the
inmates of Sai Sankara Santhi Kendram. They were happy to see me as my
presence gave them some solace shelter to them. The best we could offer
them were a few hours with them sharing their woes and bygone happiness.
We tried building up their self-confidence to achieve their aims. We shared our
views and thoughts with them and they also shared their experiences with us.
It was a memorable moment for all of us.

At first we were introduced to some of the inhabitants of the house and were
later given a teaching on how important it is to have a spiritual life and to care
for people. After this we put up a small entertainment programme where we
sang songs for them, which they really enjoyed. Soon after this, they also
joined us in singing and the smiles on their faces made us very happy. We were
also fortunate enough to have lunch with these wonderful people wherein
they themselves served us food with so much love and care.

After this we went in groups to their rooms and sat down to listen to what they
had to say. Some of them even had tears in their eyes when they were talking
about their past stories. All of us were also touched by these talks. We learnt a
very good value after this trip, that is we should have due respect for the old
people and lend our ears for a minute and just wait for them to express their
thoughts.
Each one of them had their own reasons for coming to that place. Some of
them were quite comfortable and contented while some of them were
dissatisfied and upset. On seeing us almost all the old people present there
remembered their grandchildren and this was really very touching to hear.
Another thing we learnt was that we should never side-line our elders because

16
they are the ones who were always there for us and being there for them
during their old age is our duty.

Those people also play an extremely important role in the society. Moreover as
they are old, they are more experienced as they have gone through ups and
downs in their lives. Thus we should show some respect and take care of such
people and not isolate them but make them also feel a part of the family or
society.
Thus I have learnt a very great value from this trip and I hope we all will
respect our elders and make them feel comfortable and just not simply neglect
them as they are the ones who can guide us better in our lives and they will be
our well-wishers throughout our lives.

17
VALUES OBTAINED

18
1. Respect worth and dignity of individual.

2. Develop non-judgmental attitude about the individual.

3. Acceptance of every person in the agency.

4. It stands against discrimination based on caste, creed, color, race, sex

and religion.

5. Empathy

19
OUTCOME OF THE PROJECT

20
After going through my social service in Sai Sankara Santhi Kendram, I
understood that in this contemporary society people need empathetic view
and not sympathetic view. Now I think that being a part of the society helping
people is an essential social fiunction. Im happy that social service was
included in our B.Tech curriculum. It gave me an opportunity to mingle with
suffering section of the society.

The visit to this old age home taught me the value of understanding the
numerous amounts of blessings that has been showered upon my life and how
thankfulness and gratefulness would be the least I could do as part of being a
good human being.

Every person who we met in this old age home had a story, and they made us
realise the inhuman deeds that exist in our society, and how as people with so
much grace existing in our lives we should give as much as we receive.

It is our duty as children to take care of our parents and be all that they were
to us and our responsibility as human beings to care for the society and do all
within our ability to bring a smile to a person in need.

Therefore the outcome of this project was a upliftment of our thinkings and
awakening of some feelings that we never took the time to include in our daily
lives.

21
CONCLUSION

22
Being an Engineering student, I didnt get an opportunity to be a part of social
service but the 15 days that I worked with the social service organisation Sai
Sankara Santhi Kendram really changed my thoughts about social service. I
feel social service is all about Helping The Helpless and that God has given us
two hands for the purpose of receiving as well as giving. It was a touching
experience for me after I had an interactive session. The best I could offer
them were a few hours sharing their woes and bygone happiness. The values
that I have obtained being a part of this service has made me a better
individual and would always be an asset throughout my journey in this life.
