6:30 AM DEPARTURE
10th 8:00AM BREAKFAST (ON THE WAY)
NOV 11:00PM ARRIVAL TO MAITIGHAR

The last day of camp started with freshen up and then we loaded our items with the

kitchen materials and other logistics and then bags into our bus and then at around 6:30 am we
14

departed from the school and was headed to our college. Then we all stopped at Sukute to have

our breakfast then at around 8:30 we all continued our journey and at around 11 am we all

reached to Maitighar and unloaded all the materials.

Observation

Throughout the camp, I observed the life style of the people of a Thulo pakhar Community. I

notice that the people were very hospitable and friendly. I observed lots of new things with new

environments and peoples. The houses were made of mud and woods. Every single house do

agriculture for income process. The people living in Thulo pakhar community had less

employment and education opportunities as well as less knowledge about proper sanitation.

Almost all the people were uneducated and some were dropout, the economic status was poor

too. When asked about the social issues that take place in society, people were complaining

about problems they are facing such as water, electricity, child marriage , unemployment and
15

many more. Development activities still lacking behind. People are unaware about social

issues. No proper facilities of education, roads, electricity, sanitation etc…

The school where we stayed was big and beds were comfortable to sleep. Although the

bathroom, toilets were good. The kitchen area was huge also had the good space to store foods

and to wash the dishes. The place we went for outing Tatopani china border was so beautiful

with rivers and so many hills .And houses were also good I felt like my own hometown Syangja .

During the survey, the trainee observed the huge difference in lifestyle between rural and urban

people on how much different their livelihood, education. Also observed the warm hospitality

shown by kindness and closeness of the people.

Analysis

During this 12-days camp we got to view things in a different perspective. We got to analysis the

situations through a social workers perspective and not just a student. Observing the locality and

learning about the people and their problems is very important for future learning.

For a camp to be successful it doesn’t need to be all about fun and games it can be educational.

The activities organized during the have helped the student develop different skills that can be

used in the upcoming future. I also analyzed that people were happy seeing the awareness drama

and presentation which was educational. It was hard for the people living in Sindupalchowk to

earn income for their daily life and children.

16

People, their hospitality, love and friendly behavior to their guest even though they have faced

lot. Due to people of that community show that it was creating an obstacle for people’s

transportation and delaying their work. of problems and obstacles in their lives.I analyzed that

there was many problems and one of the main problem was the social issues like child

marriage ,alcoholism ,gambling and other health problems And the government’s contribution is

lacking, I also examined the work possibilities, numerous jobless people were find out through

the survey.

The location in Sindupalchowk is relatively developed compared to the other sites the trainee

visited. The place was very good, clean and peaceful. Similarly, every facility was conveniently

accessible.

Methodology

1. Active listening/ observation: I actively observed the lifestyle of people, their living

conditions. There I also saw the poverty, lack of resources and facility, lack of various

economic activities and unemployment. I also observed their rituals and also listened

about their culture and tradition. Also the scarcity of proper drinking water, lack of

electricity was also observed.

2. Community visit: During the community visit I had interaction with different

individuals. I found there are various people from different ethnicity, caste and religion
17

and during community visit I learned that people around the community has various

different social problem.

3. Questionnaire: I applied the questionnaire method by asking some questions targeting

the local people in the community. Through this I learned the different that various

people have different problem surrounding them.

4. Group work: Throughout the camp I learned to coordinate with people surrounding me

through which while doing manual work it helped a lot in coordination and interaction.

Without their coordination we wouldn’t have been successful while completing our

assigned task. With the help of group work we all also organized awareness program.

5. Active/ interactive participation: We all students visited certain schools and had a small

interactive game session with the students from the school were we learned to interact

with the school students and communicate with each other. I also learned to motivate

others to help them in participation by participating first by myself to motivate others.

Theoretical Application

At the camp trainee applied theoretical knowledge practically. We applied a lot of the social

work principles during this camp. The principles the trainee applied during the time of the camp

were:

Principles of Acceptance:

A social worker needs to accept everyone respectfully and positively deals with them. This

principle was applied on a daily basis, with the people who lived there as well the students.
18

Working in groups we had to respect everyone differences and put a collective effort to complete

the goals. Principle of acceptance was also important at the time of survey as we need to build a

good relation with the people.

Principles of Communication:

This was the one of most important applicable principle in this camp. Without this principle we

could have made this camp energetic and successful .The proper communication is crucial in

social work relationship. It was a crucial part of the camp as well. It was important for the

coordination between the trainees and also at the time of the survey.

Principles of non-judgmental:

We applied the principle of non-judgemental by not judging people on any basis. We build a

good rapport among the people by not judging them.

Social learning theory:

Trainee applied the social learning theory when trainee had a group discussion about how to

conserve the water for the daily usage. As the trainees discussed about the strategies for efficient

water usage, trainee observed and learned from others to adopt and incorporate the practice into

the trainee life by observing and learning from the other trainees which helped in implementing

the effect of shared knowledge for the water scarcity challenge.

Behaviorism Theory:

Trainee applied this theory by observing the behavior of the surrounding people and acting

according to the the people around the community.

Personal feelings

I found this social work camp to be a great opportunity. The camp pushed us to step out of our

comfort zones and made us push our limits. I found the camp very fruitful. It helped me

understand the need of social work by showing the condition that a lot of people are living in. I

also think that the camp helped me form a good bond with my friends. There were a lot of times

that I found the camp to be tiring but after the success of the camp I found all our efforts to be

worth it .From overall experience of the camp, I felt very fruitful as I got to learn many different

things from the rural area and mainly I got to practice my theoretical knowledge into practical for

which I feel so grateful for this opportunity. Also during surveys while the local people were

sharing some of their personal feelings I felt sudden sadness with them which motivated me to

become a good social worker in the future.

Challenges

Although the camp taught us a lot there were definitely some challenges along the way.The

challenges are:

 Role confusion amongst the group members

21

 Lack of coordination between the trainees

 Difficulties managing the students during the awareness program

 Difficulties in follow according to time routine.

 Kitchen work and cleaning was challenging

 Lack of proper light facilities.

 Manual work

 Talking to the strangers during survey.

Conclusion

On our 2nd camp, we got to experience a lot of things. The camp was a huge learning experience

for all the students. Students got to work as a team and Experience working in group and apply

the knowledge, we acquired in class practically. 12 days, each with new plan and objectives.

Within these days students got to see the true glimpse of the societies condition and needs of
22

social workers in today’s world. Although there were challenges along the way we were over to

overcome them. The memories and the experience that this camp has given us will forever stay

with us. Hence, the second-year camp was a whole new experience to us, visiting the places

which I had ever visited, conducting survey in different way, ended our 12 days camp with lots

of fun, entertainment, experience and learning.
