Unfortunately, neither complete pivoting nor partial pivoting solves all problems of rounding

error. Some systems of linear equations, called ill-conditioned systems, are extremely sensitive

to numerical errors. For such systems, pivoting is not much help. A common type of system of

linear equations that tends to be ill-conditioned is one for which the determinant of the

coefficient matrix is nearly zero.
