MICROSTATION CAD PROCEDURES

Revision: 4

1.0 SCOPE
Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) is an integral component of Engineering Systems Information
Management for the Canadian Natural Horizon Oil Sands Facility. The production of digital files by CAD
is an important corporate asset. The greatest payback for CAD and related technology is in the reuse of
the digital data for facilities management and as a foundation for future work activities. If CAD files are to
be an effective source of information, they must adhere to a standardized set of criteria.
This document is not intended to dictate the manner in which drawings are developed. Rather, its intent is

3
to identify the needs of Canadian Natural for facilities management purposes. These consistent

00
deliverables provide assurance for a comprehensive life-cycle strategy. The contractor is responsibility for
the accuracy of all input and output of computer based applications.
2.0 PURPOSE

00
Properly using the concepts and tools outlined in this manual will better equip CAD systems users to

-IM ed
produce high-quality CAD drawings more efficiently and consistently. Thus, the purpose for having a CAD
Procedures manual and associated electronic files can be categorized into three main areas:

-0
1. Quality of Deliverables: The documentation of Canadian Natural CAD Procedures will aid in
creating deliverables that have a consistent and superior quality
RO as
2. Efficiency: The resource files that accompany this document are designed to help users quickly
place standard graphical elements.
-P ele

3. Consistency between Canadian Natural and Contractors: Use of the resource files that are part of
the Canadian Natural CAD Procedures will ensure that drawings will conform to Canadian Natural
requirements and are consistent – whether projects are done by contractors or Canadian Natural
personnel.
00 R

3.0 QUALITY ASSURANCE

At final drawing submission, Canadian Natural will carry out a Quality Assurance (QA) Check in
accordance with 00-PRO-IM-0006 on the electronic CAD data files to assure adherence to the CAD
Procedures. In addition, Canadian Natural reserves the right to request CAD data files at our discretion,
to conduct a CAD drawing audit.
 As defined in 00-PRO-IM-0006, Non-Conformance Reports (NCR) and Corrective Action Requests
(CAR) will be issued for any functions not adhering to the guidelines and requirements defined by
Canadian Natural.

N-

No drawing will be accepted as final until all NCR & CAR QA issues are resolved. Deliverables that
fail to meet any requirement in any of these areas will result in the turnover being rejected until all
corrections have been made.

4.0 DRAWING FILE FORMAT

All CAD deliverables not originating from the Engineering Design Database Systems shall be developed
in MicroStation or AutoCAD design file format unless otherwise specified in the Scope of Services. This
requirement ensures that Canadian Natural receives a product that is immediately usable on Canadian
Natural CAD systems.
This procedure is intended for MicroStation V8 file format. If AutoCAD is used, please refer to 00-PRO-
IM-0130. If MicroStation V7 is used, please refer to 00-PRO-IM-0002, for PDS related standards to be
used. MicroStation V7 file format files should be worked on in MicroStation V7 and not V7 Workmode

3
within MicroStation V8.

00
The content of all final submission design files delivered to Canadian Natural shall match the content of
the printed PDF drawing. Editing the PDF will not be permitted.
NOTE: Design files received in MicroStation format (.dgn) are not to be converted to AutoCAD format

00
(.dwg). Design files received in AutoCAD format may be worked on in AutoCAD or converted to
MicroStation format but must remain consistent between conversions.
5.0 SPECIALIZED DESIGN SOFTWARE

-IM ed
-0
In addition to the core CAD engine, there are other design applications used at Canadian Natural (PDS,
RO as
SPI, SPPID, etc.). Generally these packages have their own layers, colors, line styles, etc. which are
automatically created by the software. Users can use a “look up” table or a mapping facility to cross-
reference the layers to the Canadian Natural Standard layers when the need to exchange data is
required.
-P ele

Each design application will have their own project approved procedures and conventions in a separate
document and should be followed for specific application use. Those documents however, will not
compromise the integrity of the Horizon CAD Procedures.
00 R

6.0 FILE MANAGEMENT

6.1 Electronic Drawing Naming Convention
Canadian Natural requires that the electronic file name be identical to that of the drawing number
as indicated within this document minus any attribute separator(s). Each CAD drawing and
reference file must have a unique name that adheres to the naming structure indicated herein.
 Under no circumstances shall the revision identifier be part of any CAD electronic file
name.
 The CAD electronic file name shall NOT contain any special characters or spaces
N-

6.2 Directory Structure

The contractor is responsible for ensuring proper management of the CAD files being used on all
HZ

Canadian Natural projects. The contractor will ultimately be responsible for ensuring that drawing
deliverables are submitted at the completion of a project with the directory structure as indicated
in the turnover procedure 00-PRO-IM-0015.

7.0 DESIGN STANDARDS

7.1 General
MicroStation drawings have the capability to have multiple sheets per design model. While this
may facilitate the production of construction documents, it can impede the archival process and

3
create content discrepancies. Therefore, to minimize potential problems:
 Prior to delivery to Canadian Natural Horizon, any files containing multiple sheets shall be broken

00
down into separate drawings containing single sheets.
 Drawing files delivered to Canadian Natural Horizon shall contain only one drawing and one title
block per file.

00
 Drawings shall be purged of empty, unused or non-essential drawing data outside of the title block

-IM ed
extents, prior to submittal to Canadian Natural Horizon. This includes all unused levels, cells, text
and entities.

-0
 Drawings shall not contain overlaid, duplicate elements unless the elements are assigned to
RO as
different levels
 A Saved View shall be initiated showing full view of drawing including border for plotting and batch
plotting. The saved view will be named Final Plot.
-P ele

7.2 Seed Files

When a new design (dgn) file is created, MicroStation makes a copy of the specified template file.
Template files are known as seed files. To ensure design file setup consistency, the following
00 R

standard seed files have been created and will be provided to the contractor for use on Canadian
Natural projects.
The following two dimensional (2D) and three dimensional (3D) seed files shall be used to
facilitate the creation of any new design files including cell libraries;

7.3 Standard Settings

Working Units
MicroStation lets you draw in “real world” units; meters, millimeters, etc. These real world units
are called working units. Working Units are expressed in Master Units (the largest units in
common use in a design file, such as meter) and fractional Sub Units (such as millimeters).
The standard unit definition file for Canadian Natural is cnrlh_units.def and will be provided to

3
the contractor for use on all Canadian Natural project work.
MicroStation design files used in plan preparation shall use the following standard working units;

DGN Library
DGN Library files (DGNLIB’s) maintain and deliver CAD Procedures. The DGLIB provides these
standard items but locks them from being edited, thus helping to maintain Standards. The
standard items include the following;
 Levels
 Level Filters

3
Text Styles
 Dimension Styles

00
 Cells
Only Levels, Level Filters, Text Styles & Dimension Styles are maintained in the current Canadian

00
Natural standard DGNLIB’s. All other standard elements are delivered through other methods.
Refer to the relevant sections below (Standard Elements) for more information.
7.4 Standard Elements

-IM ed
-0
Symbology
RO as
Symbology includes which color, line style, and weight are associated with each element to be
drawn. Following the symbology outlined in the manual is essential for several reasons, but
perhaps the most important reason is the standardization of the final output. Following standard
-P ele

symbology ensures that each element will plot the same from drawing to drawing.
Levels
A design file may contain an unlimited number of levels in which data may be displayed. There
are two primary ways in which to assign symbology to each element: first, the color, weight and
00 R

linestyle of the graphic elements are set independently. The other is ByLevel symbology. With
ByLevel symbology, each level may have a pre-assigned color, linestyle and weight. By selecting
the desired level, these attributes are automatically set.
Level Libraries
Levels and the associated ByLevel symbology are stored in a DGN Library and must be attached
to any MicroStation file. The contractor shall attach the DGN Library at the time of drawing
creation.
Standard levels based on the level names developed by Canadian Natural are maintained in
N-

cnrlh_levels.dgnlib.
Level Filters
Level filters serve two purposes: (1) to limit the number of levels that appear in a level list and (2)
HZ

to turn groups of levels on and off when needed. The latter application is especially useful for
controlling level display of attached reference files.
Standard level filters based on the level names developed by Canadian Natural Horizon are
combined with and maintained in cnrlh_levels.dgnlib.

Line Weights
Line weights are used to differentiate graphical elements in the design file and on the plotted
sheet. Line weights width ranges from weight 0 (narrowest) to weight 31 (widest) and designate
the thickness of the line to draw or plot a graphic element. Standard line weights for plan graphics
are set per level and maintained in cnrlh_levels.dnglib.
Line Styles
Line styles are used to differentiate linear elements in the design file and on the plotted sheet.

3
There are eight default line styles available in MicroStation using the values zero (0) through
seven (7).

00
00
-IM ed
-0
RO as
-P ele
00 R

The standard resource Line Style file for Canadian Natural is, cnrlh_lstyles.rsc
Cells (Canadian Natural)
Most of the cells created in Canadian Natural cell libraries have been created as graphic cells.
The symbology (color, style, weight and level) of a graphic cell is determined when it is created.
When graphic cells are placed, they are level-independent, i.e., they keep the settings that were
active when they were created. A few cells have been created as point cells where appropriate. A
point cell takes on the active symbology set in the file at the time it is placed.
N-

MicroStation V8 has the ability to place cells at True Scale. The cells supplied with the Canadian
Natural CAD cell libraries have been created with Units of Resolution to match the standard seed
file (meaning that they will always be true scale). Nevertheless, the contractor will ensure True
HZ

Scale is turned on at all times.

Save Relative Path remembers the directory location of the reference file relative to the directory
of the active file, thereby promoting portability of the project working directory. This setting will not

3D and 2D Design Files
