ACT 1, SCENE 2
PROSPERO: Its time I let you know. Give me a hand removing my magic
cloak. (Music 1)
(She helps him remove the cloak, and he puts it on a rock.)
Sit down. Now Ill tell you more.
2|Pa ge
PROSPERO: Good luck has brought my enemies to us.
Ask no more questions. (He puts his hand over her eyes.)
You feel sleepy. (Music 3)
ARIEL: More hard work? May I remind you of what you promised?
PROSPERO: What?
ARIEL: My freedom.
ARIEL: Remember that I have served you well. Ive told you no lies, made no
mistakes.
ARIEL: Thank you for rescuing me. Ill do whatever you command.
3|Pa ge
PROSPERO: Do it. And in two days, I will release you. Now go, do this, and
return.
(Ariel leaves. Prospero looks at the sleeping Miranda.)
PROSPERO: You lie! It works better when I punish you than when I am
kind to you!
MIRANDA: You disgusting slave! I used to feel sorry for you, and taught you
to speak. But you are so disgusting.
CALIBAN: You taught me language, but the only thing I learnt is how to curse!
4|Pa ge
PROSPERO: So, slave, go!
(Caliban leaves. Ariel enters, invisible, singing; Ferdinand follows.)
(Music 5)
(To Miranda.) Open your eyes and tell me what you see.
PROSPERO: No, girl. It eats and sleeps and has the same senses we have. This
man you see was in the ship.
MIRANDA: Hes handsome.
PROSPERO: (To the audience.) Its turned out just as I hoped it would.
(music)
FERDINAND: (To Miranda) The heavens smile on me to meet you!
Are you a mortal woman or not?
(Music 5)
MIRANDA: Dont wonder, sir. I am a mortal woman.
(To Ferdinand) May I have a word, sir? I think you are wrong.
MIRANDA: Why is my father so rude? This is the third man Ive ever seen,
and the first one who has turned my heart.
FERDINAND: If you dont have someone else, Ill make you queen of Naples.
(To the audience) They are in love with each other, so I must make this
more difficult.
(To Ferdinand) Listen to me. You have come to this island as a spy so
you can take it from me!
FERDINAND: No, upon my honor!
5|Pa ge
MIRANDA: Nothing bad could be in him.
(To Ferdinand) Come. Ill chain your neck and feet together.
FERDINAND: No! I wont let you do it! (He draws his sword, but Prospero
puts a spell on him, and he cant move.)
PROSPERO: Silence!
Even if I were in prison, it would be worth it to see this girl one more day.
MIRANDA: (To Ferdinand) Dont give up. My father is better than his words
tell you. Hes just acting strange right now.

ACT TWO, SCENE 1
GONZALO: Its amazing that our clothes, even though they were soaked in the
sea, still look quite good.
GONZALO: Sir, he may still alive. I saw him swim strongly and ride the
waves.
GONZALO:
(MUSIC7)
(Turning to Alonso) If I were the king of this island, I would allow no
poverty, and no slavery. Thered be no work. There would be no swords,
spears, knives, or guns.
7|Pa ge
GONZALO: How about laughing me to sleep? I feel very tired.
ANTONIO: Sleep!
SEBASTIAN: Well then, sir, dont resist the feeling. Sleep can be a comfort.
ANTONIO: We two will guard you while you sleep and keep you safe.
ALONSO: Thank you. (He yawns and falls asleep. Ariel leaves.)
(MUSIC7)
SEBASTIAN: How very sleepy they are!
ANTONIO: Its this, sir. It is impossible to think the kings son did not drown.
GONZALO: (Suddenly waking up) May the good angels preserve the king!
(The others wake up and are surprised.)
8|Pa ge
ALONSO: Whats going on? Everyones awake?
SEBASTIAN: (Thinks quickly and drops his sword.) While we stood here
guarding you, we heard a bellowing, like bulls, or maybe lions.
ALONSO: I heard nothing.
Did you hear this, Gonzalo?
GONZALO: May heaven keep him from these beasts! He is surely on the
island.

ACT 2, SCENE 2
(Another part of the island. Caliban enters with a load of wood. Thunder can
be heard.)
(MUSIC 9)
CALIBAN: May all kinds of diseases fall on Prospero, little by little. I cant
stop cursing him.
(MUSIC 9)
(Trinculo enters.) Here comes one of his spirits now to annoy me
for bringing firewood so slowly. Ill lie flat. Maybe he wont notice
me.
(MUSIC 10)
TRINCULO: There arent any bushes here to keep off the weather, I dont
know where to find cover.
(He sees Caliban) Oh, what have we here? A man or a fish? Dead or
alive? A fish. He smells like a fish, a very old fish! A strange fish (He
looks closely at Caliban)
He has legs!
(MUSIC 2)
(Thunder is heard) The storms coming! Ill stay here till the storm is
over. (He takes shelter by Caliban)
(MUSIC10)
(Stephano enters, singing. He has a bottle of water.)
STEPHANO: This is some island monster with four legs who has a fever, I
think. Ill give him some medicine.
CALIBAN: (To Trinculo) Dont torment me. Ill bring my firewood home
faster.
STEPHANO: Come here. Open your mouth. This water will help! This will
stop the shaking! Open your mouth!
10 | P a g e
TRINCULO: I should know that voice! It has to be . . . but he is drowned.
STEPHANO: Four legs and two voiceswhat a monster! Ill cure his fever
with this bottle of water.
(Pours water into Calibans throat)
(Goes to Trinculos throat) Come! Ill pour some in its other mouth.
TRINCULO: Stephano!
STEPHANO: Is it your other mouth calling me? (He seems afraid.) Mercy!
Mercy! This is a demon, not a monster! Ill leave him and not eat with the
demon.
STEPHANO: (To Trinculo) How did you escape? How did you get here?
TRINCULO: I swam ashore, like a duck. I can swim like a duck, I swear.
STEPHANO: Though you can swim like a duck, you look like a goose! . . .
STEPHANO: From the moon, actually. I was once the man in the moon . . .
11 | P a g e
CALIBAN: Ill show you every inch of this island, and I will kiss your feet.
Please be my king.
CALIBAN: (Singing)
Ill make no more dams for
catching fish; nor fetch in kindling
wood.
Ban, Ban, Caliban
Has a new mastergot a new
man!

ALONSO: You can sit down and rest. What we are looking for has already
drowned in the sea
PROSPERO: (Aside) OLD MAN, you have just said the truth.
(MUSIC 12)
SEBASTIAN: (looking over the banquet) No matter, since they have left
the meal behind. Would anyone taste of what we have here?
ALONSO: Not I.
14 | P a g e
(Thunder and lightning. Enter ARIEL.)
He addresses Antonio, Alonso and Sebastian. While Ariel speaks, the
spirits become visible again and draw menacingly closer around the men.
ARIEL: You are three men of sin
(MUSIC 12)
The men drop to their knees, frozen in terror. Ariel vanishes in thunder; the
spirits carry out the table and banquet.

ACT 4-SCENE I.
Before PROSPERO'S cell.
(MUSIC 14)
Enter PROSPERO in his magic robes, and ARIEL
ARIEL: Confined together, all prisoners. The good old lord Gonzalo-- His
tears run down his beard, like winter's drops from eaves of reeds.
ARIEL: Before you can say 'come' and 'go,' and breathe twice. I'll fetch
them, sir.
(MUSIC 14)
Re-enter ARIEL, playing music, followed by ALONSO and the lords.
Exit Ariel. Suddenly, the charm breaks and the lords come back to their
senses.
Alonso reaches tentatively for Prospero's hand, just to make sure he's real.
ALONSO: Please forgive me for all I have done to you. But how could
you be living and be here?
16 | P a g e
PROSPERO gestures and FERDINAND and MIRANDA enter at the door
of the cell.
Alonso gasps. Ferdinand jumps to his feet, seeing his father alive, and
kneels before him.
ALONSO: (to Ferdinand) Arise, and say how you came here.
GONZALO: (to the heavens) Look down, you god, and on this couple
drop a blessed crown!
Re-enter ARIEL invisible, with the Captain and Bosun amazedly following
PROSPERO: Sir, I invite your highness and your train to my poor cell,
where you shall take your rest for this one night, and in the morning I'll
bring you to your ship and so to Naples.
PROSPERO: My Ariel. You have fulfilled all what I have asked you to
do!
You are free now and the whole island is yours. Do whatever you think is
right.
17 | P a g e
With a smile, Ariel leaves the stage.
(MUSIC 14)
NARRATOR:
Remember
Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.
The whole history of the world is summed up in the fact that,
when nations are strong,
they are not always just,
and when they wish to be just,
they are no longer strong.
