On this feast of St. Augustine,
together with other church leaders
and dioceses, we express our deep
concern for the continued spate
of extra-judicial killings that have
claimed even young lives and many
others without due process. These
summary killings and violations of
human rights cannot be justified by
invoking the greater common good
which our recent history teaches
us will only lead to greater recourse
to arms and authoritarianism and a worsening malaise in
society.
We are thankful that here in the archdiocese, there
are only isolated reports of Tokhang killings, thanks to the
conscientious guidelines of our local government officials and
police officers. On the other hand, our integral intervention
on the drug menace, especially the community-based
rehabilitation programs, often run jointly by LGUs, NGOs
distributing relief goods for Muslim residents in a barangay in Marawi
Greeting the wounded soldiers
and church groups, have shown that a significant number
of Persons with Substance Use Disorder can be treated and
empowered to live again productive lives.
Our respect for the dignity of every human life also leads
us to condole over the loss of lives in the ongoing Marawi
crisis especially the killing of innocent civilians, Muslim or
Christian, and military personnel in defense of the countrys
sovereignty against wanton terrorism.
For these reasons, I am appealing to all our churches
and communities to revive the tradition of ringing the De
Profundis bells at 8:00 every evening and to say the prayers
for the dead. Let this be our sign of protest against extra-
judicial killings in the war on drugs. Let this also be our call
to prayer until the end of Martial Law in solidarity with all
the affected families in the Marawi crisis, especially those who
have lost loved ones.
From the depths of our hearts, de profundis, may the God of
Compassion and Mercy be our constant guide in the campaign
against drugs and terrorism.

Saint Vincent Ferrer Chapel adopts GBSD

The Saint Vincent Ferrer Chapel of
Malanang, Citihomes Opol, under Our
Lady of Consolation Parish is one of
the pilot chapels in the archdiocese to
adopt and implement the Gasa Balik sa
Dios (GBSD) Program, inspired by Fr.
Lourdesio Armstrong P. Balacuit, SSJV,
parish priest. Thirty representatives from
the identified pilot chapels and parishes
attended the Archdiocesan GBSD three-
day Seminar Workshop (April 3-5, 2017)
at MINSAC, Carmen, Cagayan de Oro City.
The GBSD Team from Ipil Prelature are
Msgr. Gilbert Gente; Joel Hermosisima;
Joel Reganion and assisted by Fr. Roy
Barros.
The said Archdiocesan GBSD
Seminar Workshop was re-echoed at Saint
Vincent Ferrer (SVF) Chapel at Pag-ibig
Citihomes by Rev. Fr. Roy Barros on May
28, 2017. It was attended by 25 chapel
officers and BEC leaders. They agreed
on a formal launching of the program
on July 9, 2017 during the Sunday Mass.
Two months after its implementation,
the SVF chapel officers and BEC leaders
have come to realize how timely it is for
a growing community like Citihomes.
It created a big impact not only on the

Visayas. He further said that there is
a tremendous decrease in the number
of young men and women entering
the seminary and religious life.

to the National Laity Week celebration
on September 16 to 31, 2017, the
20th National Biennial Convention
on October 27-29, 2017, and the
election of the new set of Laiko

Alvin Gabayeron, 26 years old,
died after having been accidentally
electrocuted by a high tension wire in
Canitoan on July 18, 2017.
Fr. Roel V. Buntol, JCL, SSJV who
saw the accident, tried to save him
but to no avail. Alvin was immediately
rushed to Polymedic Medical Plaza but
was confirmed dead on arrival. His
grieving mother could only say, Akong

her husband and Alvins only brother
passed away years ahead.

the neighborhood. The program also
strengthened our existing 17 BEC
groups including two sitios of Tulajon
and Anilaw, Opol. The role of the BEC

part of Laikos nationwide lay leaders
assembly per region to intensify Laikos
effort to wake up Laiko, the sleeping
giant. It is also a call to take action for
the Philippine Church whose churches
are filled on Sundays while Philippine
society remains sick.
At the end of the meeting, the
attention of the leaders was focused
on the doable and short term actions
like the use of social media to stop fake
news and bad publicity of the Church
and its workers sharing of materials
and information; affirming one another
through messages posted in the
Facebook page and messenger; regular
holding of meeting and assemblies;
recruitment of more diocesan lay
councils to join Laiko; Laiko to come
up with the general stand on the issues
cropping up before this is subject to
discussion, and election preparation of
electing representative from Mindanao.
Alvin has served as sacristan
of Fr. Roel for nine long years while
pursuing his studies. He spent the
best years of his life at Eco church
and at Sto. Nio Parish church. Fellow
acolytes and friends fondly remember
him as a diligent and silent worker.
Fr. Roel in his message said, It pains
me so much to see a young, vibrant,
thoughtful and conscientious convent
staff die before my eyes.
During the funeral mass, Fr. Roel
further said, We cannot understand
the wisdom of God. Why this has to
happen too soon? We have to accept
the will of God. Alvin finally found his
way to the heavenly Father.

The Gasa Balik Sa Dios is a great
response to actualize the priestly,
prophetic and kingly mission shared by

and self-governing by sharing the
spiritual gifts, the 3Ts - not only time, or
talent , or treasure alone, but the three
of them, together.

Higher Education of the Philippines
delivered her comprehensive keynote
address which revolved around the call
on strengthening the ASEAN education
of today.
The WCCI conference
which was my first to have attended
has broadened my perspective on
education like the best practices among
ASEAN countries as they response to
the continuing challenge to develop
appropriate and enhanced curriculum
and instruction of our time, Ceballos
said.
The three-day gathering of
educators in ASEAN and beyond also
served as avenue for the delegates to get
updates on the latest ASEAN efforts and
experiences in education, the effective

Leadership
Training

The Volunteers in Prison Service
(VIPS) of Sta. Rita de Cascia Parish,
Gingoog City who are also School
Gender and Development (GAD) and
Guidance coordinators and workers
joined the leadership training on
July 8, 2017 at the DepEd, Division
Conference Hall in Gingoog City.
The training is the highlight of
the quarterly meeting of all School
GAD and Guidance coordinators and
workers which focused on Pointers
on Leadership which are essential
not only in the school but also in
the community they serve. It was
conducted by Mrs. Nilda U. Villegas,
DepEd Division GAD coordinator and
the Prison Ministry coordinator who
believes that leaders as shepherds
must be caring, have courage and
serve as guide.
The input enlightened the
VIPS on their roles as leaders and
the qualities they should manifest
in order to serve others without
compromise. It also highlighted the
3 Gs of being a good leader: to set
realistic GOALS; promote what is
GOOD and serve GOD who loves all.
The talk left the VIPS with
enlightened body and mind, with
renewed eagerness to share their
time, treasure and talent especially
to our incarcerated brothers and
sisters. Imbued with a true Christian
spirit of service, they are now more
equipped to become effective agents
and rebuilders of hope and love.

School. Kini gidumala sa Kongregasyon sa Religious of the Virgin Mary
sa tuig 1959.
Sa tuig 1931, si Fr. David Dally mipuli kang Fr. Sulivan isip kura
paroko. Sa tuig 1939 si Fr. Dally nahimong kalihim ni Arsobispo James
TG Hayes. Siya gipulihan ni Fr. Walter Hamilton.

Sa tuig 1959, ang pagdumala sa parokya ni Sta. Maria gihatag sa
kaparian nga diyosesano. Ang kura paroko mao si Fr. Pedro Wang,

Council na-organisa uban ni Bro. Edong C. Lim, isip presidente. Si Fr.

Ang parokya sa Sta. Maria dela Candelaria, uban sa giya ug

Tagoloan hosts Archdiocesan AWRACO holds BEC formation towards

Forming BECs as agents of
communion, participation and mission.
This was the theme for the 5th annual
celebration of the ACDO-Basic Ecclesial
Community Family Day, one of the biggest
and momentous gatherings of different
parishes and vicariates in the Archdiocese.
It was participated by different family
leaders who strive to be Christ-centered
and build camaraderie through their
interaction with other religious people.
The family day was held at Sta. Maria De
La Candelaria Parish-Tagoloan Misamis
Oriental on July 28-29, 2017.
It started with the Holy Mass
presided by Most Rev. Antonio J. Ledesma,
SJ, DD, Archbishop of Cagayan de Oro,
concelebrated by the priests from the
parishes of St. Francis of Assisi Vicariate,
and other priests from the Archdiocese. In
his homily, Abp. Ledesma spoke about the
crisis confronting our brothers and sisters
in Marawi City. He told stories of what
religious people experienced throughout
the siege in Marawi. He also presented
the various forms of assistance to those
affected by the crisis like outreach program
and more. BEC is motivated to empower
Bag-ong
its role in being an agent of communion,
participation and mission. After the
mass the Archbishop led the procession
throughout the poblacion of Tagoloan.
The day concluded with a Solidarity
Night. Representatives from the ten
Vicariates showed their talent as they
participated in the retro and modern
dance. All the associates of Basic Ecclesial
Community were happy to interact and
reach the objectives for the said event.
The Family Day enriched the participants
especially with the talks given by
prominent and respected speakers like
Msgr. Perseus Cabunoc, and His Excellency,
Most Rev. Jose A. Cabantan, SSJV, DD, Bishop
of Malaybalay. Their talks encouraged BEC
affiliates to be more Christ-centered as our
society faces difficult circumstances.
At the end of the 5th BEC Family Day
2017, the venue for the next annual Basic
Ecclesial Community Family Day 2018 was
announced. Fr. Julius Clavero SSJV, director
of BEC-ACDO said: MANABOK KITANG
TANAN SA ISLA SA CAMIGUIN. The crowd
shouted with joy and excitement as they
look forward to the sweetness of lanzones
and the warmth of the religious people of
Camiguin.

Most Rev. Antonio J. Ledesma,
SJ,DD was the guest speaker during the
general assembly of the Association of
Women Religious in the Archdiocese of
Cagayan de Oro (AWRACO) on August
21, 2017 at Ajis Resort, Opol, Cagayan
de Oro City.
He talked on BEC Formation
towards Communion of Communities.
He said that BECs are small
communities of Christians, usually of
families who gather around the Word
of God and the Eucharist. He said that
the late Bishop Francisco Claver, SJ
defined Basic Ecclesial Communities
as worshipping communities of
faith-discernment and-action at the
lowest levels of the Church who try
in a participatory way and under the
guidance of the Holy Spirit, to put life
and faith together into an integrated
whole.
Abp. Ledesma pointed out that
5 characteristics of BEC include: a)
small communities of believers whose
members are united to one another
and their pastors (Koinonia); b) share
the Word of God guided by regular
catechesis (kerygma); c) gather
regularly in community worship and
celebrate the Eucharist and other
Sacraments (leitourgia); d) share their
material concerns and get involved
in action for justice and peace and
social transformation (diakonia); e)
commune with the poor and empower
the poor (Church of the poor).
He also said BEC is a way of being
Church. Through the BEC, the Church
truly experienced as a community of
disciples. The lay faithful experience
communion of communities. The
Church becomes truly the Church
of the Poor. The lay faithful live out
their vocation as people of God that
participate in Christs prophetic,
priestly and kingly mission.
Ledesma said the Churchs
deepest nature is expressed in her
3-fold responsibilities: proclamation
of the Word of God, celebration of the
sacraments and the exercise of the
ministry of charity.
During the open forum, some
sisters who were involved in BEC in
their respective parishes shared their
observations and experiences with
the people. To date, the Archdiocese
has 10 vicariates, 65 parishes and 600
chapels.
Sr. Regina Cesar, OSA, chairperson
of AWRACO thanked everyone for their
presence and active collaboration in the
different activities in the archdiocese.
In the afternoon, there was a search
for Ms. AWRACO 2017 and the lucky
winner was Sr. Maria Elisa Abecia,
