Rizal

El Filibuterismo
- Rizal began the work in October of 1887 while practicing medicine in Calamba
- Translates to the subversive
- When Basilio pleads his Only ambition is to alleviate the physical ills of my fellow
citizens, Simoun retorts: What are physical compared with moral ills? What is the
death of one man besides the death of a whole community?
o Rizal was criticizing Basilio
o Both had a traumatic childhood but had a different destination
The youth can still be the future despite their traumatic childhood
Example: Basilio was still idealistic
The moment you stop studying, you become less idealistic
- Simon retorts: You should save other sons from being murdered, other mothers from
being mad. Resignation is not always a virtue; it is a crime when it encourgaes
- Jose Rizal is bent on idea: the reform is not going to work; the revolution may be
more effective
- Should freedom be given or taken?
- Wrongs are not righted by other wrongs
- We must win our freedom by deserving it, improving the mind and enhancing the
dignity of the individual, loving the just, the god, the great to the extent of dying
o Rizal knew that a reform wont work; he wanted to start a revolution to
achieve freedom
A peaceful means of revolution

More about Rizal

- Rizal was exiled in Dapitanwhere you exile a troublemaker; felt like a social
pariaheverything he touched would be encouraged to start a revolution
o School was conceptualized and where he met Josephine Brackenwas
looking for a cure for his fathers eyes
o Fell in love with Josephine and got married
o He knew that his exile will not end
o Visited by several individuals from Manila (The KKK)
Revolutionary group; establish an independent Philippines; far from
the idea of the reform movement
They needed the support of Rizal
He felt cryptic about the KKKsecure money, weapon, education,
and training before you start a revolution
Same advice Crisostomo gave to Elias
Will you join us? Rizal said no
Rizal decided to leave the Philippineshe asked if he can be a military
doctor in Cuba
