consequences of committing sin through the actions of the mariner.

The consequences from killing an albatross cause a guilt to a mariner and make him become

a merciful person. A mariners action of killing an albatross which is considered to be a great sin

causes him to be punished. The punishments come in many forms and one of them is making a

mariner suffers from his guilt because all of this crews are killed due to his action of killing the bird.

It is stated When that strange shape drove suddenly / Betwixt us and the Sun in order to

demonstrate that there is an unknown ship coming toward the mariners ship which he initially

thinks that it is going to be his savers. However, as the ship gets closer, the mariner is able to see

that the people in the ship are not alive. The characteristics of the people in an unknown ship is

further described, Is that a DEATH? and are there two? / Is DEATH that woman's mate? // Her

lips were red, her looks were free, // The Night-mare LIFE-IN-DEATH was she, and it

potentially proves that they are not alive people due to the womans locks and skin which are

yellow as gold and white as leprosy. Then, the ships encounter and the people in an unknown

ship start to curse the mariner, Each turned his face with a ghastly pang, / And cursed me with his

eye. This is considered to be one of his punishments, however, it does not end up with cursing but

also leading all of a mariners crews to die. It is stated Four times fifty living men, / With heavy

thump, a lifeless lump, / They dropped down one by one. Here, the first punishment from killing

an albatross is portrayed and an affect of it potentially creates a guilt to a mariner as many innocents

are killed because of him. His confused mind is stated My soul in agony. // The many men, so

beautiful! / And they all dead did lie: / And a thousand thousand slimy things / Lived on; and so did

I. He is confusing and feeling agony on how he is still alive even though he is a person who kills

a bird and the ones who died are the innocents who he describes as beautiful instead of him. He

unworthiness of staying alive to further reflect himself who does not deserve to alive either.

However, a mariner does not only feel guilty but he also becomes a merciful person. In the end, a

mariner becomes a person who He prayeth well, who loveth well / Both man and bird and beast. //

He prayeth best, who loveth best / All things both great and small; It can be seen that he changes

from a birds killer to the one that love and respect all creations, not only a man but also the

bird, beast and all things both great and small. It is clear that the consequences from killing

an albatross causing a mariner to suffer from his guilt, and become a kind and merciful person to

everything at the end.
