1. (a) What are the steps in basic design process? Explain how CAD can improve the
conventional design process.

(b) What are the functions of design work station? Explain the two basic techniques
used in current computer graphics terminals to generate image on CRT screen.

5. (a) What are the three requirements of assembly modeling? Explain the different
steps in assembly modeling and obtain assembly tree for screw jack assembly shown
in figure.

7. (a)Briefly explain steps involved in manually carrying out the finite element solution
to a physical problem. (10 marks)
(b)Determine the nodal displacements, rotations and the global and element forces
for the beam shown in figure. Take youngs modulus, E=210 GPa and inertia of
beam, I=2 x 10-4m4.

8. (a) Derive stiffness matrix for a bar/spar element using direct stiffness method.
(10 marks)

(b) Evaluate the stiffness matrix for the element shown in the figure. Assume plane
stress condition. Take E=210GPa, Poissons ratio=0.3 and Thickness=10mm. The
co-ordinates are given in millimeters.
