1. (26 points) Determine the specific volume of refrigerant-134a vapor at 160 psia and
330F based on
a. The ideal gas relation (7 points)
b. The generalized compressibility chart (13 points)
c. The experimental data from tables (6 points)
2. (14 points) Water is being heated in a vertical piston-cylinder device. The piston has
a mass of 20 kg and a cross-sectional area of 100 cm2. If the local atmospheric
pressure is 100 kPa, determine the temperature at which the water will start boiling.
3. (34 points) Superheated water vapor at 180 psia and 500F is allowed to cool at
constant volume until the temperature drops to 250F. At the final state, determine
a. The pressure (13 points)
b. The quality (7 points)
c. The enthalpy (7 points)
d. Show the process on a T-v diagram with respect to saturation lines (7 points)
4. (26 points) A piston-cylinder contains 1 lbm of saturated water at 70F and 85%
quality. The water is then cooled so that it is a saturated liquid at 70F. Determine the
work done during this process.
