Canadas Decade of Dominance
Since 2005, we have seen Canada dominate mens hockey. It all started when the 2005 World junior

team whose roster was filled with future stars like, Sidney Crosby, Corey Perry and Patrice Bergeron.

The gold medal in 2005 would start a run where Canada would win five straight gold medals with the

final one coming in 2009 where Canada won the last medal in front of the home fans in Ottawa, Ontario.

The future was looking very bright for Canadian hockey and it showed as just the next year at the 2010

Olympics in Vancouver. Canada lost only one game and beat the USA in the finals where Sidney Crosby

scored what is known as the Golden Goal to win the gold medal for

Canada. Now after this, the world junior team, which is a team made up

of the best players under the age of 21, they went downhill after the 2009

victory; we saw them fail to win the gold medal in five straight world

junior championships (2009-2014). This was frightening, because this

was the future of hockey in Canada but it was all reassured when Canada

entered the 2014 Olympics as defending champions and they did not fail

to disappoint. Going undefeated the whole tournament and winning their second straight Olympic gold

medal; the best part was this was not all for Canada they went on to win the under 21-championship

going undefeated brining the gold medal back to Canada. Just when everyone thought they could not do

anymore, we were proved wrong; they entered the 2016 World Cup of hockey as the odds on favorites

and once again they lived up to it going undefeated and winning the World Cup of hockey championship.

This capped off Canadas decade of dominance in fashion finishing as they started on top. Still the future

looks very bright with players like Sidney Crosby and Johnathon Towes still in their prime and rising

stars like Connor Mcdavid and Tyler Seguin who have many years of national hockey ahead of them.

The dominance could very well continue!!

Should NHL Players be allowed to play in the Olympics?
Since 1987 when the International Olympic Committee

(IOC) made the decision to allow professional athletes

to participate in the Olympics, NHL players such as

Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemeuix, Sidney Crosby and

Jamie Benn have dawned the red and white. For the

upcoming 2018 winter Olympics in PyeongChang the

NHL has decided not to allow their athletes to compete

in the games. Personally I disagree with this decision. The Olympics are a competition where the best athletes

from around the world come to one location to compete for their respective countries. Since 1998 when the

NHLs best players took a leave of absence in order to compete for their countries we have been treated to some

of the best games hockey has to offer; for example Canada versus the USA at the 2010 Olympics which saw

Sidney Crosby score the golden goal in overtime to win gold for Canada. On top of that the 2014 Olympics

which saw the mens team go undefeated; but now all of a sudden they want to stop allowing NHL players to go

because of the fact that so many games are played in such a short amount of time. This leads to a much larger risk

of key players getting injured; back in 2014 New York Islanders captain John Tavares suffered a severe left knee

injury during the Olympic games and missed the rest of that NHL season. The other reason is because the NHL

has to stop their season to loan players; no one is forced to compete; this competition is made for the best of the

best to compete and it is an honour to be able to lace up your skates and compete for your country. Players are

willing to take the risk to compete and they should be allowed; the truth is some players such as Alex Ovechkin

and Crosby have and are upset with the fact that they can no longer as of right now attend

the Olympics. What will Ice hockey be like if the best players are no longer allowed to

compete? Who will represent Canada at the 2018 Winter Olympics?
