Summary (Guidelines i & ii)

Write a five-sentence long summary that states: a) the problem addressed by the article (the "topic"); b)
the article's method of analysis; c) the article's conclusions and/or recommendations. Remember, if you
record any direct quotes or use paraphrases (not your own words/ideas) be sure to include the page
number where this information came from.

In her paper, Paul Abrams argues that abortion and surrogacy are stigmatized because they deviate from
traditional role that good mothers play. Post-1960, the social stigma toward abortion and surrogacy has greatly
lessened because of the improving of womens status and the development of biological technology such as IVF,
egg freezing and so on. However, even though by changing the current laws stigma is decreasing, there is still
strong stigma toward them. For one thing, when new laws are set up in order to legalize them, they can regulate
or change now permissible practices, and from this point new stigma can arise. As a result, today legal battles
over them still continue and some new laws which seem aimed at making it much more harder to have an
abortion are uphold, and this social situation signals to women that choosing abortion (or surrogacy) is not
favored by society.

Assessment and reflection (Guidelines iii & iv)

Now write a few sentences evaluating the source and assessing its usefulness for your research goals

This source is very useful because when I consider the problem about abortion, I come up with only moral or
ethical sides but in this article the author develops his idea by discussing how it will affect the society, so this
article gave me a new approach toward my theme. And comparing the degree of acceptance of surrogacy and
abortion seems interesting. Im sure this article will contribute to my research goal.
