The All Blacks, the Kiwis, Silver Ferns,

The teams may be New Zealand-

are immigrants or cast-offs from other
countries.
But the brand behind the teamnow,
thats pure New Zealand, backed by
New Zealand companies hmmm, not
so sure.
Delve deep into the background or
even the foreground of some of these
companies and ownership is often found
to belong to overseas interests.
Go NZ, Go Kiwi, Buy NZ-made, they
tell usthats the way forward. The
future of this country lies in buying NZ-
made products to keep the country
working. So, with cheque book in hand,
no cash jobs this month (oops, did I
write that out loud?) I set off to do just
that buy Kiwi-made.
Into the clothing shops for some new
boxer shorts. Farmers trading store
good New Zealand shopping to be had
here. Theres a brand I recognise, check

the reigning champion, I will give all you
guys some advice
1. Find the oldest tool you can get
your hands on to trick up. Preferably
one that is a bit sluggish will be a
weapon.
2. Cake mixers have proven to be real

use. On the side you have two buttons

arc running right above the unit, which
became very handy for lining up square
light fittings in this ceiling I was doing.
Many trades can gain important
benefits from using this laser. You will
appreciate the 4 degree out-of-beam

The mounting bracket would have to
be the best one Ive come across. It has
a magnetic base with screw holes for

used on a tripod but if you had the

for producing quality power tools, so
when I was asked to give this new nailer
a good going over I thought that with its
undoubted pedigree it should be another
great tool from the Makita stable. And I
havent been disappointed.
The GN900 shines in several areas.
I didnt know they made nailguns
but Makita even have their own
pneumatics factory so a lot of research

wiring and circuit boards are encased to
limit exposure to dust and grit. Also the
battery sits in a shockproof mounting
and positive connections are achieved
by using male and female contacts. All

The use of lithium ion technology
offers fast charging, the ability to top up
the charge at any stage (because the
battery has no memory) and longer
battery life. Li-ion batteries can be
cycled up to 1400 times compared with
NiCad at 800 charging cycles and they
hold their charge for significantly longer.
An LED light in the handle indicates
battery level and can signal if there is
trouble with the tool. The small battery
size means less weight, too.
I found the GN900 very easy to
dismantle for routine on-site maintenance
with the onboard Allen key fitting all the
necessary bolts.
MY TIP: dismantle the nailgun upside
down.
Because Makita only make tools, you
have the convenience of being able to
use practically any brand of nail or gas
(nails range from 50 mm 90 mm), but
make sure you use good gas cartridges
as some low-cost ones contain little or
no lubricant.

Unfortunately, you need the Allen key
to adjust the depth, although this is
something you probably wouldnt do
very often anyway.
As youd expect, Makita offer their
usual high standard of technical and
service backup with this machine and
having $1.5 million worth of spare parts
sitting in their warehouse means getting
any of your Makita kit fixed is going to
be hassle-free.
So, overall, an impressive performer
from a leading power tool manufacturer. The GN900
in action.

studio and, more recently, the new
six-storey Bio Sciences building at
Canterbury University.

in search of new stories
that my readers might enjoy, I
manage to find interesting women who
work not only with tools but in a trade
(read that as career) that most women
wouldnt ordinarily be expected to work
in. This time I had to travel no further
than my home computer, as TOOLs very
own Safety Specialist, John OReilly, set
me up to meet with a young female

working on the tools per se, I decided
that this particular lady would offer yet
another interesting perspective for you
to discover. Now that Im working in a

it would be an industry I, too, would
enjoy learning more about.
So, meet Karyn Beattie, twenty-
two-year-old Safety, Quality and
Environmental Advisor for Downer
EDI Works Limited: positive, chirpy
and strong-willed. Karyn is currently
managing safety on a large construction
project, the SH20 SH1 Manukau
Extension. It is being constructed
by Leighton Works, a joint venture
between Leighton Contractors and
Downer EDi Works. The new motorway
will connect the southern and south-
western motorways. Its a large job and
Karyn deals with construction workers
every day. Although a lot of the on-site
inspections are carried out by a Safety
Officer, Karyn enjoys being out of the
Port-A-Com (portable office) and
communicating with the workers as
often as possible.

has always felt she understood the
concept of adding value using safety
and has set herself high targets. Three-

The real facts
This year a company that I know well
has been reported in the press as hav-
ing had two fatal accidents on their site
in South Auckland.
The commonly held belief of many
employers is that if they implement
work place drug and alcohol testing they
will lose half their staff. This belief is not
supported by the facts.
NZDDA statistics for 2008 show that,
overall, 10.9% of all workers tested
returned a positive result for drugs. Of
those positive results, 70.3% were for
cannabis, 20.9% for amphetamines and
8.8% for a collection of other drugs.
The really alarming statistic is that
nearly one in four workers tested for
drugs following workplace accidents
returned positive results. In 2007 this
figure was one in five, so that is a
dramatic increase in only one year.

Yes, there have been two fatal
incidents. The first was of a delivery
driver working for a sub-contractor
of the main contractor. A delivery of
steel was being made; when the
driver released his tie-downs the
load slipped onto him and killed
him.
The second fatal incident took
part on a section of the site
that had been handed over to
the client and was under the
control of the client, and it was
one of theirs who was tragically
killed.
I have deliberately not used names
until this point, as the poor contractor
has had more than enough bad press.
But in this case there was nothing
Mainzeal could have done. Mainzeal
were splashed all over the press under
damning headlines, just because their
name was on the main gates.
All of us that write, in any way, shape
or form, for any part of the press, needs

policy and then following up with a
good staff education package and
testing programme, including random
testing where appropriate, a company
will not only be reducing the potentially
significant hazard in the workplace
that drugs and alcohol pose, but
there are also many flow-on
effects and benefits, such
as reduced absenteeism,
higher productivity and
reduced lost-time
injuries.
NZDDA provides

urine or saliva (oral
fluid) tests. These tests
provide instant results
which allow employers
to identify those at risk
and take the appropriate
action straight away.

I have friends and colleagues on this
site and my heart goes out to them
and their sub-contractors. They have
had to endure the trauma of these two
deaths and the bad publicity that was
actually due to others.
The saddest part, of course, is that
yet again we are talking about those
struck down while at work. While
Mainzeal were unable to influence
these cases, questions now should
be asked of others, although the
proper source of such questions is the
Department of Labournot the press.
I look forward to the findings of these
tragic incidents, as we must learn from
them and prevent others from being
killed and maimed in our industry.
In closing, I would ask you all to
say a prayer to whoever your god is
for these poor lost workers and their
families.

Why, oh why, oh why do
we keep putting pictures into
magazine articles, and even
advertisements, that show poor
safety practices?
Is it that those selecting the pictures
know no better or is it that the industry
is still happy to accept examples that
are less than perfect? Sometimes
theyre not just poor practicesthe
pictures could almost be used by the
Department of Labour as evidence in a
prosecution!
The following pictures with captions
illustrate what I mean:

Good use of harness here. No gloves. No dust mask. No eye protection. Hearing protection unused.
Shame about the hi-vis. Hands going over the threshold. No eye protection.

Have you ever looked at some advertisements and articles and

thought that doesnt look too clever?
Total lack of PPE. No fall protection. Good use of ear protection and

There are pictures out there that are
great, they portray the correct and safe
way to do things and they are the only
pictures that should be accepted for
standard articles and most certainly
for advertisements. Sometimes, with
the correct text, pictures showing bad
practice are also needed to show what
not to do, but for the most part positive
reinforcement is what is needed.
If you work for a company that is
planning advertisements or you work
as a press officer for a company, do
yourselves a favour: get your pictures
checked by your company Health and
Safety Department before you let
anyone print anything.
Trust me, it will be worth it.

Impact bar from Sidchrome

When I was given a few
things to test for this
issue, the one item
that got my attention
was this impact bar
from Sidchrome.
Straight away, I
thought to myself
I know just the job for
this tool, but I admit I also
had some doubts mainly
because it looked a bit awkward, I
guess. Two days later a Subaru Legacy
GT came in for a clutch job and part of
that job involves taking off the flywheel.
Thats where the fun starts, because
holding the flywheel onto the crank shaft
is a bunch of recessed Torx Plus bolts
so tight that sometimes either the tool
breaks or the bolt heads strip. We have
tried both factory tools and tools from
other suppliers, with the same result.
We know its not just us being rough
because other workshops have had the
same problem.
With some reservations, we set up
this funny-looking Sidchrome Impact Bar
with a step-down adaptor to fit our Torx
Plus socket, and hit it with a hammer.
Each time we hit it, the bolt turned a little
as if it wasnt even tight. Very little effort
was placed on the breaker bar and after
a few hits the bolt came loose. It would
have paid for itself on that one job alone
because of time not spent drilling out
stripped flywheel bolts and replacing the
broken tools.
On another occasion, one of the guys
broke two drive tools trying to undo
an axle nut because he couldnt find the
drive socket set. He then thought to
ask me if he could use this Impact Bar,
but after a few hits with a sledge hammer
we gave up because we didnt see any
movement. He then found the socket
set (five feet away from him, of course)
and prepared himself for a struggle, but
the axle nut came undone easily so we
concluded the Sidchrome Impact Bar had
loosened it. Convinced? Well, we are.
You may have noticed I say we
when I talk about using this tool, Thats
because on these two occasions it
helped having someone else swing
the hammer while I held the tool
steady, but in many situations you
can confidently use it on your own.
It works just like an impact driver and
the manufacturer states that you get
a multiplication effect of eight times
the force applied to the bar, so you have
impact plus rotating motion in one hit.
This would be useful for people working
from home or out in the field where you
dont always have access to workshop
equipment, like compressed air-driven
impact tools, and you need to deal with
tight fasteners.
The one obvious limitation would be
that if there isnt enough room to swing a
hammer, it wont work. The quality looks
good and there are no signs of damage
to the Impact Bar after smashing it with a
sledge hammer, but due to the nature of
its action, there may be some warranty
issues if you damage whatever tool you
use with it. The chunky rubber handle
gives you something decent to hold on to
as well. The model number is #14949 if
you were to ask for it.

Air ratchet driven fluid pump from ABW Tools

Next up is another novel piece of
equipment. It is an air ratchet-driven fluid
pump from ABW Tools, and the model
number is #70912. The Ratchet Pump
is hand-held and has been designed for
use with a 3/8 drive air ratchet but it can
also be driven by a drill using the adaptor
included in the kit. The pump is directional
and there is a hook thingy to lock in the
air ratchet, allowing you to hold the pump
assembly with one hand while securing
the outlet hose with the other.
Outlet pressure is pretty good and the
hose can get away from you if you dont
hold it, so hold on tight, especially if you
use a drill. Using a drill can be a bit fidgety
because there is fair bit of resistance in
the pump and the drill doesnt lock into
the retainer hook like the ratchet does but
youll get used to it. Minimum tool speed
required is 200 rpm so some high-
torque air ratchets that spin slowly
wont be that good with it. The
pump needs to be primed first but
if there is some fluid in it already
it will normally start pumping ok.
Note: be careful the first time you
use it because it is packed full of
red grease which doesnt mix with
water and may contaminate other
fluids.
There are a few warnings
like, for obvious reasons, do not use has water in it from the previous job, so
it with flammable fluids. Also its not make sure you clean it between jobs.

To finish with, a ABW Torsion Bar Kit John from TOOL called me the other day
for fitting wheels. This kit has four absolutely fizzing about the fact that Teng

The sleeves can come off if there isnt
enough room in the bolt holes of some
alloys out there. These eight pieces
come in a compact blow-moulded
plastic case for convenience so theres
no excuse not to keep it handy.
Dont forget how small the factory
wheel brace is on most cars and that
most people arent as strong as you,
you big brute. Also, over-tightening
wheel nuts can cause damage to the
car. The one thing I didnt like about
the torsion bars is the torque details
are etched into the paint and not
stamped into the metal. I dont know
if the writing will still be visible in a
few years after the paint has worn
off, because as you know I expect my
tools to last forever. For your nearest

Davison Scores Back-To-Back Top-10 Results In Hamilton

Alex Davison
has backed
up a 9th-place finish in
the opening V8 Supercar race in
New Zealand with 10th place in the
final race of the Hamilton 400.
Davison was made to work hard
for the result after qualifying 21st in a
session that was shortened after Tim
Slade crashed into the wall.
A combination of quick and near-
mistake-free driving saw Davison move
up the order in the opening stages of the
59-lap race.
A 14.5 second stop for four tyres and
fuel on lap 26 put him into the top 15
before a safety car bunched the field on
lap 39. On that re-start Davison kept
out of any dramas, while others
around him succumbed to the
tricky Hamilton street circuit.
The 10th-place finish at
the end of the race earned
Davison the 7th highest points
score of the weekend. He
has now moved from 17th equal
before the weekend to be 11th in the
championship.
Two top-10 results for the weekend
are a strong reward for the IRWIN Racing
team, said Davison.
We didnt make things easy for
ourselves qualifying where we did, plus
my starts were woeful. However, our
race pace was very good and full credit to
the boys in the pits as I gained positions
in both races thanks to awesome stops.
I locked a tyre once, otherwise I was
happy overall with how I drove. Certainly
we gained positions from others
mistakes, but a track like this bites hard
and you have to pay it plenty of respect.
This weekend we were solid, but
what has me excited heading forward is
that we still have so much to come from
the car. Plus I know I can get better.

really improved his speed throughout

Our group have been under the pump
since Christmas building the car, and
then we had a tough start in Adelaide.

in Supercars. Not only one, but two!
Plus we were third fastest during Friday
practice, so I know everyone involved on
the IRWIN side are very excited going
into this year.

Apart from a minor scare involving a
rather large tourist coach (might is right,
John!) we arrived in one piece.
Having been last year, I knew my
way around but it was great that Flood,
Buzz, JK and the other John were able to
make it this time and soak up the unique
atmosphere of this fantastic event.
I dont know why, but the myriad
promo girls were very popular with the
guys who took advantage of numerous
photo ops!
The nice people at Irwin Tools were
our hosts and went to great lengths
to ensure we enjoyed the day. We
had an exclusive tour of the pits, met
Alex Davison, the new driver for the
Irwin-sponsored car, and experienced
first-hand the behind-the-scenes action.
Just a few pertinent facts about the
cars that might interest you:

tent with the sales team, checking out
the latest offerings from them and having
a go at the Irwin Challenge.
Unfortunately for the others, John and
I had the only tickets to the corporate
hospitality tent which sat at the end of
the first straight right amongst the action,
offered food and beverage and the
option of sitting down in comfort. But as
we were the oldest, it seemed only fair
that we sampled the more luxurious side
of the proceedings and I think it would
have been very rude not to.
Needless to say, the racing action
was awesome. Being so close to
the track was a real bonus, you could
actually smell the burning rubber, hear
the shriek of brakes and get a feel for
the brute power of these cars. Just
about everybody wears earplugs and
for a very good reason. The noise
is overwhelming! I loved every minute

The New Freemans Bay building and a young Rodney Fox.
Fox and Gunn have been in business
for 80 years and has undergone many
changes along the way. Interestingly
enough, it has only had four managers
during this time. Rodney Fox, son of
founding director Frank A Fox, is one
of those managers and today we take
a look at his journey.
Rodney joined Kidd Garrett at the age
of 17 in about 1949 or 1950. The exalted
position was delivery boy and Rodney
says there were some memorable things
that happened during this period.
One time I was given a fistful of
orders to pick up from Steel & Tube
in The Strand, Parnell. Jim Campbell,
the Despatch Manager, said: Here,
Lightning, pick these up. Having ridden
to the Steel & Tube Company, I handed
the orders to a large storeman who
proceeded to fill the basket of the bike
with pipe fittings. Then he asked me do

into the basket. The tyre went flat so we
pumped it back up.
I was on my way back with this
rather precarious load when the previous

Avenue, where unfortunately the lights
changed against us just as the front tyre
jammed in the railway lines and the bike
started to pitch forward. Fortunately
Derek was a large lad and held the bike
in position while I managed to keep the
bike upright, but the handlebars were
bent. The overloading caused some
other minor damage.

Given that this is the plumbing
issue, I want to mention water.
With annual rainfall in many
parts of NZ measured in
metres, only Cantabs and
East Coasters would use
the word scarce to describe
our water resources. So if
water doesnt seem scarce in
your neck of the woods, why is
sustainable use of it so important?
If you live in an urban area, your water
has undergone quite a journey before
it gets to your tap. Every step of this
journey requires major infrastructure
and energy.
The importance of sustainable
management becomes clear when
you consider the cost of each of the
cycles described above. Not just
the economic cost of multi-million
dollar water treatment plants and
distribution networks, but the social
and environmental cost of more dams,
tunnels, trenches and structures
required to keep the water flowing. And
thats the easy part.
The harder part of water
management is dealing with it
once you have showered

household can expect to pay around
$750 per annum through their rates for
water-related services. Then theres
the visual cost of the monstrous waste
water treatment plant, the cultural
significance of some of these beaches
where waste water is discharged and
the social cost of sitting in traffic while
they dig up another road to increase
the size of the pipes. There must be a
better way.

Pipe-less Cities
At the Blueprints for Sustainability
Conference 2008, I listened to Dr Ron
McDowalls vision for a sustainable city.
There are no water pipes in Rons city
none. Rain water catchment provides the

Use water-efficient taps, toilets and
shower heads to replace those oldies.
I fitted a flow reducer to my shower
and saw a notable decrease in our
monthly power bill while still enjoying
excellent pressure.
Fix leaky taps, dunnies, shower heads
and pipes. One litre per hour adds up
over the year. If its a hot tap you could
save yourself a small fortune.
Consider installing a rainwater
catchment tank. At the very least you
can use it for watering the garden and
washing the fishing gear. Rotation
moulded plastic tanks are cheap,
robust and available anywhere they
are farming dairy cows (which is
nearly everywhere nowadays).

Dont seal every corner of your
section with concrete and asphalt.
Use plenty of permeable surfaces to
reduce the runoff to stormwater. Rain
gardens act as good buffers, reducing
peak stormwater loadings, and are a
nice landscaping feature.
If you are building in a rural area, there
are some great septic tank systems
available now which treat your water
to a high enough standard to use
on the garden. Google anaerobic
digester if you are interested in
generating some bio-gas from your
waste.
P.S. Dont forget about those grants
from EECA. Make the most of it while
it lasts!

PVC is widely used in plumbing and electrical
conduit because of its low cost and availability.
Unfortunately, the manufacture and disposal of PVC
is harmful to the environment.
To encourage the minimisation of PVC, the New
Zealand Green Building Council award points for
projects that use alternatives in plumbing and
electrical systems.
HDPE is a common alternative to u-PVC
pipes. It is cost effective, more shock
resistant and can be recycled at the end
of its useful life. Ask your supplier about
alternatives to PVC.
