QUESTION 1

Figure shows the cross sectional of a beam

a) Calculate the centroid point and moment of inertia


along neutral axis

b) If the beam that simply supported at both ends carries a uniformly distributed
load of 5 kN/m along its 10 m length. Calculate the maximum compressive
and tensile bending stress.

QUESTION 2

a) A steel shaft 0.3 m long that has a diameter of 40 mm is subjected to a


torque of 80 kNm. Determine the maximum shearing stress and the angle of
twist. Use G =83 GN/m2.

b) A steel marine propeller shaft 140 mm in diameter and 1.8 m long is used to
transmit 5000 Watt at 189 rpm. If G =83 GN/m2. Determine the maximum
shearing stress.
