Ecological Succession-School Farm Observations

Figure 1: This picture represents the first two stages of ecological succession. The sidewalk
represents bare rock and the little gold circles with the arrows pointing to them are the lichen
(pioneer species). There is only one population of lichen on the sidewalk and they are very low
in numbers.

Figure 2: This next stage of ecological succession shows the growth of grasses. Grasses
usually come into play whenever the soil that is created by the lichens is deep enough to
support life after many years. These grasses are very large in numbers and consist of only one
population.

Figure 3: This fourth stage of ecological succession is where the shrubs start growing. Shrubs
start growing because pioneer species starts to grow.

Figure 4: This stage is the last stage in ecological succession. There is a fully grown mature
forest, complete with shrubs, trees, and grasses.
