Photosynthesis- Pigment Lab

Paper Chromatography is a good way for separating and identifying pigments and other
complex mixture of molecules. This pigment experiment started with the students taking a r olled
up leaf and putting it against the white paper. They then took a p enny and pushed it against it
the leaf, leaving behind the pigment. We then rolled up the paper with the remaining pigment,
and placed it in a beaker of alcohol. After 10 minutes in the beaker, the alcohol separated the
pigment farther up the paper. The green color is where the pigment originally started off and the
yellow color is how far the pigment traveled/separated after 10 minutes in the alcohol.
