Overview
Latin I is designed to offer a structured, sustained practice in the reading and analysis of basic Latin and
provide a cultural overview of ancient society, as well as a structured analysis of basic elements of the
English language. The course will provide classroom instruction, followed by outside assignments
designed to solidify concepts learned in class. By the end of the semester, the successful student should
be able to:
1. decipher the elements within basic Latin sentences in order to understand what is being said
2. read with understanding short paragraphs written in Latin
3. compare basic concepts of political structure, religious beliefs, and everyday life of the
ancient Romans with cultures of today and have a deeper understanding of the
contemporary relevance of classical language study
4. utilize enhanced general language learning techniques and aptitudes, including facility with
English
5. develop his or her full intellect through the strengthening skills of deductive and analogous
reasoning, interactive learning, comparative analysis, and critical assessment.

Necessary Materials:
Textbook: Ecce Romani I (MUST BE COVERED)
3 Ring Latin Binder with dividers (or other acceptable organizational method)
Writing utensil, Markers/Colored Pencils, and Paper
Index Cards for Vocabulary Study
Suggested: Basic Latin-English Dictionary (Cassell’s Latin English Dictionary or comparable)

Policies & Procedures:

Classwork/Homework Policy: All assignments will be given points, including completion of vocabulary
index cards for each chapter. All homework is due at the beginning of the period. Homework can be
expected every night, except Friday. Written homework assignments must be legible and demonstrate a
concerted effort on the part of the student to achieve the correct translation.

Tests/Projects: Students should come to class prepared for any tests or projects. They will not be able to
leave the class for materials. Any quizzes or tests may include: fill-in-the-blanks, translation paragraph or
sentence(s), or both, grammar questions, and/or cultural questions. Academic dishonesty will not be
tolerated and will result in 0 points for the test or project. Any test on which a student receives a grade
below 70% must be signed by a parent or guardian.

Participation: Daily preparation is EXTREMELY IMPORTANT and will be heavily considered in assigning a
participation score! Participation in class is crucial to learning a new language. Remember, in a class with
significant translating, individual students’ unpreparedness will affect his or her fellow students and the
pace of the class. Also, because we are working within a time period foreign to us, we will respect one
another’s opinions and thoughts in order to maintain an environment where all students are
comfortable during discussion.
