2 L&T was the first company to introduce Moulded case circuit Breakers (MCCBs) in India. Over the years, it has developed &
enhanced the products to growing requirements of market conditions.
L&T MCCBs use latest technologies for circuit interruption under faults. These MCCBs comply with standards IS 13947, IEC 60947
and EN 60947-2 and are certified at independent and approved test authorities.
L&T offers a wide range of MCCBs with current ratings from 0.63A to 1600A in 3-Pole & 4-Pole versions & breaking capacity from
6kA to 100kA. These MCCBs are available with Thermal-Magnetic as well as with Electronic release (above 125A in DX range).
These MCCBs are available in Fixed or Drawout versions. They are also available in utilisation category A or B.
L&T MCCBs are complemented with a wide variety of internal and external accessories.
APPLICATIONS
Distribution Feeders Ideally suited for incoming and outgoing feeder circuits on distribution boards.
Transformers Provide effective protection to distribution transformers as outgoing breakers on the LT side.
DG Sets Used for protection and control of diesel generating sets against overloads and short circuits.
APFC Systems Suitable for controlling LT capacitors for power factor corrections.
DC Loads Suitable for both AC as well as DC applications. Hence find application in protecting rectifier panels.
UPS Used for UPS & Electronic equipment protection.
Motors Specially designed MCCBs for Motor back-up protection provide Type-2 co-ordination (as per IEC 60947)
in conjunction with suitably rated contactors and relays.
Furnaces Suitable for high frequency systems upto 400Hz and can be used for control of high frequency furnaces.
Also used in induction furnaces along with semiconductor fuses.
WORKING PRINCIPLE
L&Ts new range of MCCBs operate on Current limiting principle. This

helps in very fast clearance (less than 10 mS) of short-circuit faults. This is
achieved by
1. Quick opening of main contacts.
2. Guiding the arc rapidly away from the contacts into the arcing chamber.
3. Quick quenching of arc by using effective arc quenching devices.
As a result peak short circuit current (Ip) is limited to cut-off current (I c).
Thus, I2t let through (proportional to the shaded area) is considerably

reduced, resulting in lower thermal stresses in downstream equipments
and connecting cables.

contact. The strong wipe action of the contact system keeps the contact surface clear of oxide films.

L&Ts new range of MCCBs can be mounted up to 900 in any direction.
MCCBs FOR MOTOR BACK-UP PROTECTION

MCCBs are increasingly being used in motor application as
a backup protection device due to following advantages:
Low down time
Reduced running cost
No risking of single phasing
Availability of various accessories
TYPICAL MOTOR FEEDER

A typical motor protection scheme comprises a starter (contractor and thermal overload relay) and a short circuit protective device(SCPD)
e.g.MCCB.
Thermal overload relay provides close protection to the motor against single phasing and moderate overloads like stalling etc. Protection
against higher overcurrents, beyond capability of the starter including short circuit faults is offered by MCCB.
It is necessary to have proper discrimination between thermal overload relay and SCPD for any effective protection scheme. Type DM
MCCBS are hence designed with instantaneous release to ensure proper discrimination.
FUSE MONITORING DEVICE

L&Ts range of MCCBs also includes the Fuse Monitoring Device type DF, designed to monitor the operation of fuse.
In the motor feeders, where Switch Disconnector Fuse units are used for motor backup protection, there is every possibility of only one of
the three fuses blowing due to a fault, resulting in single phasing. This can be avoided by using Fuse Monitoring Device along with Switch
Disconnector Fuse units of any fuse ratings (refer page 2/79 for connection diagram).

ACCESSORIES
INTERNAL
2 SHUNT RELEASE
The shunt release provides remote tripping of the circuit breaker. The coil of
shunt release is designed for short time as well as continuous operation (DX
range).
The operation voltage is :
85% to 110% of the rated voltage in AC
75% to 125% of the rated voltage in DC
Shunt release coil is short time rated, micro-switch is provided in the release to
cut off the supply. Once the MCCB trips, this prevents burning of coil even if the
supply to shunt coil is continuously fed.
UNDER VOLTAGE RELEASE

The under voltage release is used for protecting the installation against low voltage
situation. The under voltage release is designed to operate when the voltage
drops below a tripping threshold. This can also be used for remote tripping &
electrical interlocking purpose.
The tripping threshold is :
35% to 70% of rated in AC
35% to 70% of rated in DC
Circuit breaker closing is possible only if the voltage exceeds 85% of the rated
voltage.
AUXILIARY CONTACT BLOCK

The auxiliary contact block is used for remote signaling and control purposes.
This consists of one or more than one potential free change-over contacts. It
indicates the circuit breaker status- whether open or closed.
TRIP ALARM CONTACT

The trip alarm contact gives tripping indication once the MCCB trips. The potential
free change- over contacts can be used for indication or for control circuit.

ANNUNCIATION UNIT
Annunciation unit indicates the differential remote and local operating states
like
- Tripping by Overload release
- Tripping be Short-circuit release
- Early-alarm in the event that the Overload release setting is about to be
exceeded.
Annunciation unit has 1NO+1NC.
ELECTRICAL & MECHANICAL INTERLOCK
RESIDUAL CURRENT OPERATED RELAYS
These are factory fitted with adjustable rated fault current and delay time.
MECHANICAL INTERLOCK
For mechanical interlocking of Two or Three MCCBs with Toggle or Rotary
drive in the same distribution panel.
PARALLELING MECHANISM
For simultaneous operation of two MCCBs mounted side by side, using a
Rotary drive.
SIDE WALL OPERATOR

This is to be used for actuating the Breaker from the side of the control
panel or for changing the Rotary movement by 90o
WITHDRAWABLE UNIT
Three position Withdrawable units are available for 3 and 4 PoleMCCBs
(250A and above).
PLUG-IN ADAPTORS
PARALLELING MECHANISM 3 pole DX range of MCCBs (upto 250A) are also available with plug-in
adaptor modules.
ADAPTOR TERMINAL WITH SHROUD / SPREADER

LINKS WITH BARRIERS
Adaptor terminals / Spreader links can be connected to basic MCCBs to facilitate
termination of higher size of cables / links.
The barrier is made of material with high dielectric strength. It is used to ensure
the electrical clearance between breaker terminals. It also prevents troubles
caused by contact of conductive material to the terminals.
Shrouds are used on both the sides of MCCB to provide additional safety and
are made of superior insulating material with good mechanical & electrical

properties. The shrouds are designed for click-fit fixing & thus do not need any
fixing hardware. Shroud prevents accidental contact to bare terminals.

2 ROTARY OPERATING MECHANISM

The circuit breaker has a toggle handle operating mechanism, which also serves
as swtiching position indicator ON, OFF, TRIP. But when the circuit breaker is
installed in switchgear cubicles or distribution boards, it requires to be operated
outside of the switchgear cubicles or distribution boards. The mechanism is
designed for direct attachment to the MCCB and transforms the toggle handle
movement into a rotation. It facilitates operation of MCCB when the panel door is
closed.
ITS FEATURES
Easy operation
Door interlock mechanism. It doesnt allow the circuit breaker to be ON
when the door of switchgear cubicles or distribution boards is open thus
prevents the operator from an unsafe condition.
Door interlock defeat facility. This enables only authorized personnel to open
the door with MCCB in ON condition for the purpose of inspection.
FOR DX RANGE
REMOTE OPERATOR (MOTORISED)

For remote ON and OFF of circuit breakers. Local switching by hand also
possible.
