VI. Course Description :
A Comprehensive study of the major Theoretical orientations in Counseling and psychotherapy including therapeutic
goals, assessment, therapeutic relationship and therapy techniques stressing their implication for research and practice. It includes
experiences in microcounseling and other simulations to develop beginning counseling skills. Ethical issues & specific practical issues
related to psych will also be examined.
Course Learning Outcomes

By the end of the trimester, students will be able to.

1. Discuss the major theories of Counseling and psychotherapy including therapeutic goals, assessments, therapeutic
relationships and therapy techniques.
(assessed via quizzes, theory presentations, final exams, case follow up assignments, class participation).
2. Compare and critique major theories of counseling and psychotherapy.
(assessed via quizzes, video critique, case follow-up assignment, final exams)
3. Analyze and integrate counseling theories and develop a personal theory of counseling.
(assessed thru personal theory paper, Class participation & case analysis).
4. Examine & critique current research in counseling and psychotherapy methods and techniques.
(assessed thru journal readings)
5. Demonstrate basic counseling skills.
(assessed thru role plays, video presentation)
6. Apply the basic techniques of various psychotherapy models.
(assessed thru final exams, simulation activities, videotape of an actual client).

Course Requirements / Assignments

1. Attendance and class participation (30 pts.)


Students are expected to attend class regularly, participate in class discussions, complete in-class assignments and come
to class having read the assigned readings. A student will be dropped from the course after having occurred three (3)
absences. Participation is graded as follows:
30 - attended all class meetings was leader & facilitator of class discussions
27 attended all class meetings actively involved in class discussions
(consistently)
24 attended all class meetings and participated or missed one class meeting, but was actively involved in class.
21 missed one class meeting and participated in class discussion.
18 missed two class meetings; actively involved in class discussions.
15 missed two class meetings; participated in class discussion.

2. Individual Report / Theory presentation (100 pts.)

Guidelines for the presentation:

1. What is the theorys basic view of human nature? What are its areas of major focus and/or emphasis?
2. Who is (are) the key figures in this type of therapy? What influenced them (him/her) to develop this therapy?
3. What are the basic assumptions of this type of therapy? How do people develop problems? How do they overcome
them using this type of therapy? What is the theory of change?
4. What are the key concepts of this therapy?
5. What is the role of the therapeutic relationship in this type of therapy (helper, coach, witness)? What is the clients
role?
6. What techniques have been developed for this type of therapy?
7. What are the applications of this therapy in terms of populations, problems, settings, diagnosis, etc.? (who benefits
most from this type of therapy for what type of problems?)
8. What are the strengths of this therapy?
9. What are the weaknesses of this therapy?
10. In your opinion, what is the most significant contribution of this type of therapy to the field of counseling and
psychotherapy?

Note: Include in your report the Application of the theory to the case of Stan.
Presentation should not exceed 45 minutes to allow interaction.

3. Quizzes will be given after the presentation and discussion of every theory and shall consist of true or false and multiple
choice items. Total of 150 pts.
4. Final Exams The final exam will be a Comprehensive exam comprised of multiple choices, true or false and essay
questions covering theories learned. (100 pts.)
5. Follow up Assignments following a particular theory presented in class to allow students to apply techniques and principles
of each theory to a particular case. (100 points)
6. Counseling skills: 4 in-class role playing sessions of the basic counseling skills. Rubrics will be provided separately. (40
points)
7. Critique of 3 Journal articles on current research in Counseling & psychotherapy methods and techniques. (30 pts.) Your
critique should include basic information:
* Name of author (s)
* Title of article
* Title of journal, volume no, date, month & page nos.
* Statement of the problem or issue discussed
* The authors purpose, approach or methods, hypothesis and major conclusions Should answer more specific
questions such as:
Is the objective of the experiment or observations important for the field? Explain.
Are the study design and methods appropriate to the purpose of the study?
Have the procedures been presented in enough detail to enable the reader to duplicate them?
8. Video Project: a 20 25 minute video presentation applying a theoretical orientation/approach to a client, to be viewed in
class in CD or DVD. Purpose is to demonstrate both basic counseling skills and skills specific to your theory. Include a 1-3
minute introduction of the theories to the class. Provide handouts for the class to include main concepts and techniques of
the theory as well as the references for your text.

9. Personal Theory Paper: After studying the major theories, students will write a 4-6 page paper which discusses their own
philosophy of counseling regarding their: View of human nature, beliefs about the process of change and how to facilitate
this change, goals & purposes of counseling, type of client/counselor relationship they will establish, interventions and
techniques to be utilized, strengths and limitations of their theory and how theory addresses multicultural issues. (100 pts.)
