Speed variation of induction motors is obtained by variable

terminal voltagc, or variable frequency and adcquatc supply

voltage. If static converters are applied, the terminal voltage
will be distorted. Thus, parasitic cffccts such as supplemen-
tary losses, dips in the torque-speed curve, output power
denting, magnetic noise, oscillating torques, harmonic
line currents arc caused. It has already been shown in
[1-3] that the multiple armature reactions have to be
taken into account, if effects caused by delta connection
of the phase windings, parallel winding branches, stator
currcnt harmonics or damping of the air-gap field are to
be considered. Moreover, the influence of slot openings
[4], and interbar currents [5-7] in cast of slot skewing is
important.
Compared with conventional methods [8-10], consider-
ation of the multiple armature reactions needs additional
work consisting of the solution of a system of 14,..., 30
equations and the summation of air-gap inductances. Thc
presented theory is based on the Fourier analysis and does
not use any transformation.
As an alternative to the analytical method described two-
dimensional finite-clement time stepping procedures are
-

available [11-13]. These have the advantages of treating

transients, variable permeability, eddy currents in solid
iron, but have the disadvantages of grid generation, discre-
tisation errors, preparatory work and CPU time.
Thc aim is to deduce the necessary equations for the gcn-
cration of a fast operating and easily manageable computer
program for the determination of the parasitic effects, which
have been mentioned earlier. Thc results should be in agree-
ment with measurements and enable the engineer to find the
optimal design for the motor. Thc presented analytical
method should provide a real alternative to the work-
intensive finite-element time-stepping procedure.
Moreover, for general reader who arc less interested in
equations and deductions but rather in results, facts and
findings, instructive examples with remarks will be given
to show the influence of the converter supply on the per-
formance of the motor.
