Year of Completion: Mercy is Falling Over Me

Matthew 5

[7]God blesses those who are merciful, for they will be shown mercy.

Meekness is trust - it involves waiting; a development in our character

Mercy is not based on emotions

I. What is mercy?

A. Mercy is not emotionalism

B. Mercy is not humanitarianism

1 Corinthians 13

[3]If I gave everything I have to the poor and even sacrificed my body, I could boast about it; but if I
didnt love others, I would have gained nothing.

Mercy is deliverance from judgment. Grace is extending kindness to the unworthy.

II. Where did mercy comes from

Mercy belongs to our God.

Daniel 9:9

How do we receive mercy? If you acknowledge that you are a sinner.

Romans 12:1

1 Peter 1:3-4

[3]All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. It is by his great mercy that we have been born
again, because God raised Jesus Christ from the dead. Now we live with great expectation,

[4]and we have a priceless inheritancean inheritance that is kept in heaven for you, pure and
undefiled, beyond the reach of change and decay.
III. why do we need to show mercy?

A. God has shown us mercy

Ephesians 2:4-5

[4]But God is so rich in mercy, and he loved us so much,

[5]that even though we were dead because of our sins, he gave us life when he raised Christ from the
dead. (It is only by Gods grace that you have been saved!)

Matthew 18:33

B. God commands us to be merciful

Micah 6

[8]No, O people, the lord has told you what is good, and this is what he requires of you: to do what is
right, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.

Hosea 6

[6]I want you to show love, not offer sacrifices. I want you to know me more than I want burnt
offerings.

C. You will need mercy in the future

We cannot receive what we are unwilling to give!

James 2

[13]There will be no mercy for those who have not shown mercy to others. But if you have been
merciful, God will be merciful when he judges you.

D. Showing mercy brings happiness

Blessed means happy

Proverbs 14

[21]It is a sin to belittle ones neighbor; blessed are those who help the poor.
IV. To whom should we show mercy?

A. To our family

Great marriage is a union of two forgivers.

Ephesians 4

[2]Always be humble and gentle. Be patient with each other, making allowance for each others faults
because of your love.

Be patient. If we are not patient, we do not understand what mercy is about.

How to be patient? Get wisdom from God.

James 3

[17]But the wisdom from above is first of all pure. It is also peace loving, gentle at all times, and willing
to yield to others. It is full of mercy and the fruit of good deeds. It shows no favoritism and is always
sincere.

If you are irritable, not gentle, not a giver -- you are unwise.

Romans 12:8

B. To people who offended us

Luke 6:27-36

[27]But to you who are willing to listen, I say, love your enemies! Do good to those who hate you.

[28]Bless those who curse you. Pray for those who hurt you.
[29]If someone slaps you on one cheek, offer the other cheek also. If someone demands your coat, offer
your shirt also.

[30]Give to anyone who asks; and when things are taken away from you, dont try to get them back.

[31]Do to others as you would like them to do to you.

[32]If you love only those who love you, why should you get credit for that? Even sinners love those
who love them!

[33]And if you do good only to those who do good to you, why should you get credit? Even sinners do
that much!

[34]And if you lend money only to those who can repay you, why should you get credit? Even sinners will
lend to other sinners for a full return.

[35]Love your enemies! Do good to them. Lend to them without expecting to be repaid. Then your
reward from heaven will be very great, and you will truly be acting as children of the Most High, for he is
kind to those who are unthankful and wicked.

[36]You must be compassionate, just as your Father is compassionate.

1. Those who persecute you

2. Those who are aginst you

3. Those who do not love you

Romans 5

[8]But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners.

C. To the poor

Prov. 3:27

Matthew 25: 31-46 As much as you did it to the least of your bethren, you did for me.

D. To the lost

Romans 11:30-31
[30]Once, you Gentiles were rebels against God, but when the people of Israel rebelled against him, God
was merciful to you instead.

[31]Now they are the rebels, and Gods mercy has come to you so that they, too, will share in Gods
mercy.
