2. Past simple - Spelling rules (regular verbs)


- Verbs ending in e -e is omitted before ed. (shave>shaved, close>closed, die>died)
- Verbs on one syllable ending in a short vowel + consonant The final consonant is
doubled before ed. (rub>rubbed, stop>stopped, ban>banned, plan>planned).
- Verbs ending in consonant + -y The y is changed to an I and ed is added.
(hurry>hurried, study>studied, carry>carried, marry>married).
- Verbs ending in vowel + -y They follow the general rule (stay>stayed).
- Verbs of two or more syllables ending in a consonant + short vowel + consonant The
final consonant is doubled if the stress is on the last syllable. (submit>submitted,
prefer>preferred, regret>regretted).
- In British English a final l after a short vowel is always doubled, but not in American
English. (travel>travelled/traveled, cancel>cancelled/canceled).
