Front Cover Double Page Spread

What meanings are being created by the use of codes and conventions?
As GQ is an international mens magazine, you can see on the front cover, the masthead; the
colour of text is in red showing wealth and the font used shows the power & strength of men
as its in bold, strong font. Further meaning of the font used shows us the demographic the
magazine is based at as it is red, white and black which are traditional colours associated with
class, wealth and fame. The coverlines tell us even more about the target audience of the
magazine, for example, winterise your wardrobe and the dominant image shows that they
(males) aspire to look like the cover stars or enjoy the content. The double page spread shows
a dominant image of an artist Drake. The image on the right is a close up shot to convey the
authority & power that Drake has.

Who are the primary and secondary audiences?

The target audience of this magazine is middle-class men between 25-50 (demographics), these
men are not looking for bright colours as the magazine is quite serious and the information
that is placed is formal (aspirational double page spread). As this magazine is quite serious, it
would appeal to men living in cities/towns as theyre highly populated with this middle-aged
category (geo-demographics). The magazine would be in the category A-B as it is an expensive
magazine to an older audience as it is a well-known brand (socio-economics). The category for
this magazine would be succeeders because it is typically for people with higher end
managements and wealthier/earn more than others (higher income).
