UNIVERSITY OF SARGODHA
Potato (Solanum tuberosom L.) is important vegetable crop worldwide and especially in Pakistan.
Evaluations of germplasm for diversified breeding goals is desirable and generate information for future
breeding program. Berseem is a non competative leguminous species and can fix nitrogen to enrich soil.
Therefore, it is hypothesized that nitrogen fixation could have beneficial impact on the plant and tuber
production. Moreover, potato germplasm accessions may also have differential reponse to the
intercropping. In order to evaluate this hypothesis, potato germplasm will be collected from various
research institutes and evaluated in large plastic bags. Germplasm will be sown in completely randomized
design with four replications and two regimes. Each plastic will be sown by three tubers containing one
active bud each. Contrasting intercropping regimes will be created by sowing the berseem (Trifolium
alexandrinum L.) cultivar in half of the germplasm. Equal quantity of berseem seed will be inoclulated
with Rhizobium spp. and will be planted in plastic bags 20 days after germination of potato germplasm.
At maturity accessions will be evaluated for various yield and yield components. Data will be evaluated
on the basis of various biometrical parameters and accessions means will be compared to select potential
accessions under intercropping and non-intercropping regime.
