1
Introduction

Ductility test is classified as one of the consistency tests that there main concern is about
describing the degree of futility of asphalt.

Ductility test is conducted at specific temperature that is 25 c.

The testing machine has a constant speed of 50 mm/s 5%

The ductility could be defined as the distance which asphalt elongates before it breaking
when the two ends (clips) of the briquette mold are pulled by the testing machine with a
constant machine at specified temperature.

Objectives
To find the tensile properties of asphalt

Materials
Asphalt cement, distilled water, grace

Apparatus

No Name of Apparatus

1 Briquette mold

2 Ductility testing with water bath (150 cm max)

3 Base plate

2
Procedures

Heating the asphalt over the softening point to be liquid at most 100 c

Coat the briquette mold with (glycerin and dextrin) otherwise use the grace as
indicated in the table below

Description 1 2
Top Yes Yes
Bottom No No
Inside No Yes
Outside No No

Pour the hot asphalt at the briquette mold

Let the briquette mold to cool down in the air for 30 40 minutes

Heat a knife and use it to remove the excess amount of asphalt poured into the
briquette mold

Place the mold at the water bath for a period of time of 85 90 minutes

Perform the ductility test

Data

The ductility was found to be 73 cm

Conclusion

The distilled water was used because it has a density of 1000 kg / m3 also
it does not has any contaminates that could affect the asphalt properties.

The testing machine is doing a constant speed which is used to prevent

the sudden failure of the sample.

The coating material whether grace or glycerin and dextrin were used to
make the removing of the removable parts of the briquette mold a lot
easier

It is important that knife used is heated to make sure that heat of the
sample is not lost which could probably cause a sudden failure or making
the sample more stiff which means that its properties have been changed.

Usually ductility values fall between the 5 100 cm and the tested
sample ductility was 73 cm which is okay.

Its crucial point to know the density of asphalt since that would affect the
additives that are required to be added to the water.

If the density of asphalt is greater than water thus asphalt will sink so salt
is added to increase the density of water.

If the density of asphalt is less than the density of water thus asphalt will
float so alcohol is added to decrease the density of water.

The density of asphalt is a constant.

The density of water can be changed by adding salt or either alcohol.
