BOOK REVIEW
Remote sensing image fusion - a practical guide, by Christine Pohl and John van
Genderen, Baton Rouge, FL, CRC Press, October 2016, 266 pp., Catalogue no.
K26108, US$ 139.95 (hardback), ISBN: 978-1-4987-3002-0
It is with great pleasure that I am writing this book review for our journal. Both of the
authors are members of the international editorial board of the International Journal of
Image and Data Fusion.
Setting standards in remote sensing image fusion, the authors previously published
the third most cited article on Multisensor image fusion in remote sensing: Concepts,
methods and applications (Pohl and van Genderen 1998). Now they have produced a
textbook on the subject, providing a conceptual framework and a reference book to use
image fusion in remote sensing applications. The book gives a comprehensive introduc-
tion on what image fusion is about and explains the individual components involved to
successfully enter this exciting eld. It provides 266 pages divided into seven chapters.
Each chapter comes along with many useful illustrations and examples. In addition,
there is a summary at the end of each chapter followed by a long list of useful references
for further reading.
After a detailed introduction regarding the necessary background in remote sensing,
the various types of sensors involved, and some terminology, the rst chapter explains
the various levels in image and data fusion with an excurse in current trends. The second
chapter concentrates on setting the right context by providing a description of the
necessary pre-processing prior to the actual fusion process. This is followed by practical
workow illustrations and a detailed overview on existing fusion techniques. This core
chapter is the most complete compilation of techniques, revealing the development of
this exciting domain and clearly demonstrating the trend towards hybrid techniques
and levels. It provides the mathematical equations for the techniques involved and
contains ow charts to illustrate the practical implementation. For the use of fused
images, quality assessment is inevitable. Therefore, the authors concentrate in Chapter 4
on evaluation approaches using visual interpretation and quantitative methods, such as
indices and protocols. Another outstanding chapter in the book contains a broad over-
view on applications with plenty of examples of successful implementations. The nal
chapter discusses many of the new trends and developments of remote sensing image
fusion, which will no doubt lead to many new research papers to be published over the
coming years in our journal.
The book is written in a form that newcomers can understand what image fusion is
about and then experiment and processing data step-by-step. Due to the fact that the
text is based on 25 years of experience and publications by many dierent scientists,
worldwide experts will be able to obtain a good update on the state-of-the-art.
Last but not least, the book goes along with complementary material provided on the
Internet (http://rsif.website) where readers can dig into a massive database of references
on the subject, categorised in dierent categories, download presentation slides for
teaching, nd test data sets for fusion experiments and software recommendations,
exchange knowledge and questions through a discussion platform, participate in sur-
veys on image fusion standards and protocols for visual quality assessment and get
