Difference Between Both

Part 1:
International Baccalaureate (IB) students are required to do a History Internal
Assessment on any topic, in which I chose the New Deal Plan during the Great Depression. This
assignment is like a research essay in which a question is formed, and must include a table of
context, plan of investigation, summary of evidence, evaluation of sources (origin, purpose,
value, limitations), analysis, and conclusion.
The exigence for this essays is demonstrating skills and knowledge by analyzing and
proving that the First New Deal Plan helped improve the economy. Specifically the question that
was answered was, to what extent did the First Deal Plan help improve the economic crisis of the
Housing and Mortgage Reform during the Great Depression in 1933. In order to answer the
question, I had to argue if whether or not the New Deal plan was beneficial. In order to argue
that it was beneficial, I choose reliable online sources and specifically focussed on the Home
Owners Loan Act (act from the New Deal Plan) to prove that the New Deal Plan was beneficial.
This essay is in a historical and academic context since its purpose is demonstrating
knowledge on a historical event. The context is historical and academic because by analyzing the
New Deal Plan, it helps explain the Great Depression. The Great Depression has been one of
United States worst economic recessions in history; therefore, doing the IA on this topic makes
the context historical and academic. Since I was an IB student, doing a historical IA was a
requirement which gave rise to the context. In addition, I specifically choose to focus on the New
Deal Plan because we still use ideas from it today. Also, the Great Recession was a similar event
to the Great Depression which I experienced; so, I found it interesting to do an analysis on
something I can compare.
Some constraints for the essay is that most of the sources focus on the Great Depression
rather than the New Deal Plan. In addition, most sources are biased because they only prove that
the New Deal was beneficial; therefore, the whole essay is one sided. Furthermore, by all of the
sources being one sided, it doesn't allow for authority since the goal was simply [determining]
the truth of the matter by using the claims as facts.(Penrose & Geisler, 514) In other words, by
trying to understand the topic, it made the research essay a summary rather than an analysis.
Since I had no sources supporting that the New Deal was not beneficial, I simply concluded that
it was beneficial causing me to never question the authors.
Similarly, Janet from Reading and Writing Without Authority just agreed with the
author and used the claims as facts, making her not have authority. (Penrose & Geisler,
511)Since she did not contradict the authors or state what she believed, it made her writing a
report rather than analysis. In the IA, since all of the sources proved that the New Deal Plan was
beneficial, I just agreed with the author and never stated my opinion. By not stating my actual
opinion, it can be seen as a limitation because it shows a lack of knowledge on the topic. The
research essay (IA) is meant specifically for the IB moderator who graded it. However, since this
essay is informative, anyone interested in learning about the New Deal Plan would benefit from
it. In addition, anyone refinancing their homes would benefit from it aswell since the Home
Owners Loan Act is the process of refinancing a house.

Part 2:
Writing in the Business field is very important much as writing for a English paper. In the
business field writing is used for emails, business plans, progress reports, or powerpoints. In this
field, it's important for the writing to be clear, straightforward, and persuasive.
The exigence (purpose) in business writing is persuading, in order to gain customers. The
context is in business where there is an individual organization, community, or particular project.
As for the audience, there are many audiences such as a salesperson, warehouse workers, or the
boss.
Clearness is one of the most important key factors in writing for the field. For example,
when writing an email for a boss or co-worker it's important for the email to be clear in order for
them to understand. Also, when doing a powerpoint, the writing must be clear in order for the
audience to read and understand it. If a message is unclear it can be misleading which can cause
lower productivity, costly mistakes, loss of clients, and law morale. (Writing and Researching
in Business and Professional Communities, 154)
In addition being direct and straightforward in the writing is very important as well. For
example when presenting a new plan, it's easier to describe or present it by using subheadings,
charts, or diagrams. By using these things it makes it easier for the audience to understand since
it avoids wordiness and keeps the information more organized.
Lastly, using persuasive language is very important in the business field. For example, in
order for a business to be successful they have to gain many clients. For this reason, persuasive
language is needed in order to convince them to buy a product. If persuasive language is not
used, it would not convince people to buy a certain product decreasing the likelihood of the
businesses success.

Part 3:
If the research essay from part one were turned into a person specializing in the business
field, it would not be considered a good paper. The main reason why it would not be a good
essay is because the context is different, and because the structure for the IA and in business
writing is completely different.
Since the research essay is used in a historical and academic context, compared to the
business context, it causes the IA to not be a good paper. The research paper is more informative
rather than persuasive since it is just presenting facts and proving that the New Deal Plan was
beneficial. Although it may be persuasive in convincing the audience that it was beneficial, it is
not persuasive in trying to convince the audience to take action or accept a proposal. For
example, in the business field a purchaser mentioned that in order for them to convince people to
do what they want them to do, they have to persuade them by using persuasive and logical
language. (Writing and Researching in Business and Professional Communities, 155) If they
were to use persuasive language, they could eventually convince their boss for a new plan or a
new item to be sold.
In addition, another reason why it wouldn't be a good essay is because the structure is
completely different. In the IA the purpose is to make it easy to understand by creating a table of
contex, summary of evidence, evaluation of sources, and conclusion. Compared to a business
field writing concise language, clear organization, and visual aids like graphs and charts make
it easier to understand. (Writing and Researching in Business and Professional Communities,
153) Since the IA does not meet the requirements for a business writing, it would receive a low
grade by a professor specialized in the field.
Although the research essay would be a bad paper there are similar techniques that
could still be used when doing a business writing. For example, writing clearly,
researching, writing with authority, or using claims to support analysis. In the IA there were
multiple online sources that helped prove that the New Deal was beneficial; likewise, in business
writing, online sources can be used to support a proposal. By practicing the same or similar
principles it could eventually help for future writing situations in the business field.
