TSW be able to Waltz to Sweet Betsy

Assessment: Students will be able to perform the Waltz when asked.

Students will be able to explain what kind of music it goes with.

Introduction: Whos ready for a dance party! Except today were doing it old fashion style!
Today we are going to learn the Waltz, because it is a dance that has gone through many time
periods of dance. By learning the Waltz, we can learn about the different periods of dance and
music from there.

Instructional Strategies/Student Activities:

1. Read waltz background information sheet
2. Demonstrate the dance steps to the class and let the students practice on their own
3. Explain this dance is with a partner and demonstrate how partners dance together.
4. Have students find a partner and dance together without the music.
5. Once the dance is understood, practice with music.

Student Groupings: First students will practice by themselves, and once they understand the
steps they will be able to practice with a partner.

Materials: Waltz background sheet, Copies of dance steps, Large open area for students to
practice, Music CD of Sweet Betsy from Pike (music only version), CD Player

Progress Monitoring: I will circle the room checking on students understanding of the Waltz
both when they are dancing alone and in pairs.

Closure: Now we know how to dance the Waltz and next class we will see how that dance
changed over the years in different time periods.

Self Evaluation: This lesson was effective for teaching the content standards, but the Waltz
alone should not just be a standalone lesson. That is why I used the lesson as a beginning to
teaching different periods of music and dance.
