Building considerations: The physical space

There are two computer laboratory classroom one for senior and the other one for FET phase.
Senior learners are doing Computer literacy and FET phase are doing Computer Application
Technology (CAT) subject. Both laboratory consists of 30 desktop computers, with desks and
chairs, one projector and one board. There is physical space for learners whereby every learner is
owning his/her computer without sharing with a partner, there is also enough space for group work
and sitting in pairs. The teacher have enough space for his/her table and desktop, also large space to
fit in other tables for other teachers such as student teachers. Even a space for a teacher to move up
and down is enough and big in both classes.
The laboratories are fully furnished with tiles on the floor which are cleaned every day by the school
cleaners and the ceiling. There are plugs in the classroom under the desks for learners and also few
plugs on the wall. The computers are only accessed by the learners who are doing CAT or
Computer literacy subjects, other learners are not allowed.
There are certificates of achievements on the wall to motivate learners
Classroom considerations: The equipment and usage

The school computer laboratories owns white boards two per classroom, the big one in front and
medium at the back of the classroom. They use marking pen to write on this board and water to
erase or clean the board.

There is also a paper board in the laboratory for learners when they are doing their group work
tasks. They usually use this board when there is a quiz or class task where they have to brainstorm
some ideas or to list points on it.

There is one printer per laboratory classroom, whereby only learners who are doing Computer
studies are allowed to print and make copies. Even the teacher do copies and print for computer
learners only and other teachers at school they go to copying room.
Laboratory
Wi-Fi connection The internet connection in the classroom is fully connected at all times. The
desktop computers are connecting perfectly using LAN which connects all computers in a short
distance and other devices they use Wi-Fi connection, but only those with password. Wi-Fi is only
connecting when you inside the lab for Computer studies learners.
Usb/Memory Card/CD/Graphic Card/Usb Cable- Both computer labs they have this hardware
components because it a must for learners to contribute on their fees money for hardware
components that they will use during practicals and in Computer classroom. The CAT teacher keep
this components somewhere safe and take them out when needed and borrow the learners then
after he collect them.

Critique of the common features observed

The school have only two teachers for Computer studies which includes CAT and Computer
literacy, with 178 learners who are doing this subjects. This two teachers are working tireless
teaching this learners without a break in between classes. During practical the learners are moving
from their classroom to computer labs and when it theory classes the stay in their classroom and
the teacher comes. So all that hard work and ups and downs for two teachers it too much. The
school have to hire teachers who are going to teach Computer studies in this school.
The use of textbooks during the lesson for theory content is very slow because some learners they
do not have textbooks of their own, so they have to share and seat in pairs which cause destruction
during a lesson. Some learners do not own textbooks which is more of a backbone for studying
computer because all practical and theory work is there on a textbook.
All the teachers are trained to use computers as they have one to two desktop computers per staff
room, but they do not seem to make use of them. Other teachers they send learners to type their
class list in computer lab, print out and make copies for their personal needs, which is not allowed
since the learners who are doing computer studies are the ones who buy papers for printing and
copying. The labs rules says only CAT learners and their teachers are allowed to use Lab properties
whereas other teachers are taking advantage of the teacher to go against the rules.
Most teachers in this school they are studying with Unisa so they have assignment and tasks that
they have to complete every week through online submission. So they come to laboratory every
time when they are free and use school free wifis to do this tasks, sometimes they disturb classes by
using desktop computers instead of their laptop.
