Teacher Name Daphne Yoner Date November 8, 2017

Subject Area Mathematics Grade 1
Topic Equality and inequalities Time 15 minutes

Represent algebraic expressions in multiple ways.

General Outcome:

Describe equality as a balance and inequality as an imbalance, concretely and pictorially (0 to 20).
Specific Learner Outcome(s):

Students will: recognize when numbers or pictures representing an amount are equal or not equal, and be able to
Learning Objectives identify which number is greater than and less than in a situation.
What do you want your students to learn?

Assessment I will evaluate them based on the students ability to tell me which number/ picture is greater than or less than after
How will you know your students have the group has arranged the sign in the right direction, each student will individually explain the mathematical
learned? equation to me.

Materials White board markers, presentation/video, assignment sheets and signs to show greater than, less than or equal
What resources will you need? too.

Lesson Description Time

On the whiteboard show and explain the difference between equality or balance and then inequality which is not
balanced. Also explaining the use of the words greater than and less than. Then show them the video reinforcing
Introduction 5 minutes
the idea between greater than and less than or equal too. Afterward explaining that the sign is also similar to a
mount like pacman or an alligator where it wants to eat the bigger number.

Give each group (3 different tables) a set of problems showing either pictures or number problems where they
have to place the greater than, less than or equal to sign in the middle between the two pictures provided on the
sheet. They will collaborate in these groups working off one another to figure out which sign goes in the middle.
Body Then once the group has an answer I will select one member from one of the tables to explain to me in words 9 minutes
what the situation shows, and then ask the other two groups that have not been selected to share if they have the
same answer. This way I can evaluate the progress of each individual student. The pictures will come first in the
assignment set and then then numerical questions.

Closure Ask the students if they have any questions? 1 minute

Reflection Reflect upon where the students where engaged and where engagement was lacking, and how that effected their learning.
