SAFETY REGULATIONS General Labs

The protection of health and maintenance of safety constitute a moral obligation shared by
everyone. Safety is part of the planning process for all laboratory work. Most accidents are
preventable if appropriate safety rules are followed.

I. Personal Protection
A. Eye Protection
1. Approved safety glasses must be worn by everyone present in the lab at all
times when anyone is working in the lab.
2. Contact lens use should be avoided.
3. Students found in the lab without safety glasses protecting their eyes (not on
the desk, around the neck or on the forehead) will be given one warning. The
second incident will result in dismissal from the lab and a zero grade for that
experiment.
B. Clothing
1. Students must wear closed-toe shoes at all times in the lab. Open footwear
with socks is NOT acceptable.
2. Clothing that covers the torso and legs should be worn. Loose or baggy
sleeves should be avoided.
3. A protective apron or lab coat may be worn.
4. Hair should be kept away from the face and long hair should be tied back
II. Safe Behaviors
A. No food or drink is permitted in the lab. Never taste any chemicals or samples.
B. Do not sit on the lab benches or the floor. Professional behavior (no inappropriate
language or horseplay) is expected at all times.
C. When using an open flame remove all combustible materials in the area.
D. Clean up all spills and broken glassware promptly. Inform the instructor. Broken
glass goes in the Broken Glass box only.
E. Any injury, no matter how minor, must be reported to the instructor.
F. Students must wash hands before leaving the lab.
III. Safety Equipment and Emergency Procedures
A. Students must know the location and be familiar with the use of the following
safety equipment.
1. Fire extinguisher
2. Eye wash station
3. Safety shower
