Subject: Recommendations for Heathcot Foundation Grant

Rank Proposal Recommended Funds

1. King County Senior Center $750.00

2. CORE Center $750.00

3. Skyview Coalition $1,400.00

4. State College Student Services $0.00

5. Marc Heidelberg $0.00

Total Recommended Funds: $2,900.00

Below we have summarized the important details pertaining to the need, approach, and cost of
the proposals submitted for requested funding. We have taken all these factors into
consideration and have recommended different amounts of funding for each proposal where we
saw the most need and the greatest benefit.

We have listed the proposals in what we ranked as most to least important for consideration.

King County Senior Center

Goal: To develop a Breast Self-Examination (BSE) Outreach Program to spread awareness with
statistics on breast cancer.
Requested funding: $2,200
Suggested funding: $1,400
Explanation:
The approach for the BSE program is a step-by-step outline of the centers strategies, but
a timeline or calendar of the workshops planned would have been more helpful when
deciding on the amount of funding.
The budget is very detailed and easily breaks the costs down; however, we feel a further
explanation of the kits and materials is needed to prove that they are essential and need
to be funded.
Both women and men can benefit from the education of this program, and it could
potentially help save their lives.
We recommend to fund the Senior Center with $1,400 because we do not feel that $500
worth of refreshments are necessary, and the BSE pads can be bought by the participants
at any drugstore if they feel the need to purchase one.
CORE Center

Goal: To conduct classes for the Teen Initiative Plan (TIP), a program designed to teach teen
parents in the community important life skills that will help them be better parents.
Requested funding: $1,808
Suggested funding: $750
Explanation:
The approach explains how an additional program could help teen parents whose
children are already enrolled in the schools daycare program.
o It would be worthwhile to inquire if this program is only available to those
parents, or to teen parents in the larger communitythis way the benefits of the
program will reach more people.
While we want to recommend this proposal because of the clear need for it in the
community, we feel that the TIP program could cut back on some materials to make it
more cost efficient.
We recommend allotting $750 to this program to cover the costs of textbooks and
teaching aids.
o The TV-related items are expensive, and it is not explained clearly enough how
they are necessary to teach the class.

Skyview Coalition

Goal: To provide updated directories and prescription medication for the community center.
Requested funding: $1,965
Suggested funding: $750
Explanation:
An updated directory would be a sustainable resource for the community, so it would be
worth funding.
A clear timeline and budget is proposed for the directory.
Since the proposal for covered prescription medication was not as detailed, we would not
recommend funding it considering the lack of information.
We feel the costs of producing the directories can be reduced by binding the pages
without a three-ring binder and by using paper more creatively to eliminate the need for
dividers. Therefore, we recommend lowering the cost of funding for this initiative to
$750.
Our requested amount of funding would still allow for a directory that could reach many
people in the community.

State College Student Services

Goal: To improve driving skills of driving students.

Requested funding: $1,760
Suggested funding: $0
Explanation:
The proposal would be difficult for us to recommend because it identifies that the best
way to educate students about defensive driving is through hands-on driving exercises,
but instead the proposal asks for a classroom course to keep costs low.
While clear goals and helpful statistics on the courses are provided to prove it was
beneficial in the past, it is not specified whether the statistics apply to people who took
the hands-on driving course or the classroom version.
The budget is not defined clearly enough because there is not a detailed breakdown of
how much money is being allocated for each part of the course.
Although this proposal could potentially be beneficial for the students, we do not
recommend funding this proposal because of the lack of specificity.

Marc Heidelberg

Goal: To take special needs children out to a ball game with their families.
Requested funding: $500
Suggested funding: $0
Explanation:
The methods for how to approach this issue are a list of the writer's accomplishments
and provide no clarity as to how they help with the project.
We feel that this plan is not sustainable; this funding is to go towards public health, and
we find 16 children under round-the-clock hospital care to not fit the definition of
public.
The budget is not clearly defined, and we believe that crucial calculations in the request
for $500 were left out, e.g. transportation.
We feel this is too big of a risk to fund if there is not a guarantee that local businesses will
monetarily support the remaining costs.
We do not recommend funding this proposal in any capacity due to the lack of a clear
goal and plan of execution.

Conclusion
We do not recommend Marc Heidelbergs proposal for a take me out to the ball game.
We do not recommend the State College driving class proposal.
All other proposals we can recommend to varying degrees with budget cuts from their
proposed amounts.
