Reporting verbs

Os verbos mais comuns no discurso indireto so say e tell. Contudo, existem vrios verbos
que podem ser usados em vez de say e tell para formar frases mais curtas e mais eficientes.

E.g. 'I'm sure that everything will be alright'

He said that he was sure that everything would be alright

Contudo, as palavras I'm sure that... nesta frase tm a funo de assegurar a algum algo.
Por isso, podemos usar o verbo assure.

He assured me that everything would be alright.

Os verbos seguintes seguem o mesmo padro que o verbo say


i.e. verb + (that) + clause :

admit advise* agree announce claim complain


confirm declare explain insist mention promise*
propose say suggest warn*

* tambm seguem outros padres

Os verbos seguintes seguem o mesmo padro que o verbo tell


i.e. verb + direct object + (that) + clause :

advise assure convince inform notify persuade


promise reassure remind tell warn

Reporting actions (agreeing, promises, requests, etc)

Estes verbos normalmente usam a estrutura de infinitivo:

reporting verb + infintive with to

Exemplos:
They agreed to pay the legal costs.
He promised to come as soon as possible.

Alguns verbos podem ser seguidos de um objecto e infintivo:

reporting verb + direct object + infintive with to

Exemplos:
He reminded me to call Kath.
She warned them not to mention it.

advise ask beg convince encourage


forbid instruct invite order persuade
remind tell urge warn (not to)

Alguns verbos so seguidos de gerndio e no infinitivo:

reporting verb + verb-ing

Direct speech : 'Why don't we have the party at Peter's place?'


Reported speech : She suggested having the party at Peter's place.

admit deny mention proposed report suggest

apologize (for) insist on regret complain about
