Application Essay
From before I could walk, my dad would put little wooden hammers in my hands
and laugh as I tore across the house with them. Or other times, he would let
me play in the sawdust in his wood shop and take me to Home Depot to do a
Dad and Me build-it project. The best thing he would do though, and
arguably the most important thing, was take me on evening walks to the new
housing developments going up around my neighborhood. Most nights we would
walk through the new houses and comment on the new developments, seeing if
they had added plumbing, or possibly electricity. Because the homes only had
studs, it was often hard for me to determine the planned layout and so my dad
would always ask me what room I would choose to be my secret hideout, or
more regular rooms like the kitchen or living rooms and bedrooms. These walk-
throughs were of the highest value to me. Inspired, I would go home and draw
out my own houses, making the improvements I saw necessary which usually
included adding another six or seven stories and long spiral staircases. Although
it is not a single building that fueled my interest, it was the process of designing
and building that motivated me. Without a doubt, I am positive this is what led
to me choosing architecture as a career path.

At the present, I am interested in the interiors of architecture and restoration and

repurposing of buildings. It is almost more fun to work with set borders and to
use and bend them to their full potential rather than starting at a blank slate.
Local ex-industrial turned residential buildings in Seattle have always inspired me
to design with physical limits. I feel like this type of living has so much more
creativity and vitality than any other type of housing available, mostly because it
has a history to it. Seeing the studded homes lining my neighborhood really hit
at the core of my interest in interior architecture. But whether it is landscaping,
interior, or exterior architecture, I simply want to design and build.

Toy Cathedral, MDF,2013
The objective for the project was to analyze the toy in terms of its program, and then applied at adults. The
Toy Cathedral progresses from the simple building block into a complex puzzle of intersecting. Designed to be
used without directions, the project allows the user to creatively attach and intersect pieces until they acheive
the final result. Project from Art 272 Materials in Real Space.

View House, Arch 211, 2013

The objective of the projcet was to evaluate the way daylight affects a building down a vertical passage. Set in
the Los Angeles area, the View House, both protects from the heat, and allows light to filter through the house.
The progression downward allows the user to access complete outdoors from the roof, have diffused natural light
in the gathering area, and low light in the
private rooms on the bottom floor. A skylight
placed over the back stairwell lights the progression.

Gas Works Park Site Analysis, 2013

Focusing on pollution and history at Gas Works Park, the analysis showed the range of large scale contamina-
tions and clean up acts completed by the city of Seattle over the past 60 years. Monitoring well data is dis-
played via the site plans for the amount of Benzo(a)pyrene and tar on site that is over the regulated safety

the site and embedded underwater further through the waterway and towards Pudget Sound.
Meeting and Lounge
The glass-walled overpass to the
upper garden area allows for 360

enjoying the sun.
Outdoor Garden
The upper balcony functions as a garden
with communal plots for Wallingford
residents. The indoor area allows for

Dock and Maitenance

The dock area is accessed by passing under
the Outlook. It allows boaters to moor and for
man-powered boats to be stored under cover.
Maitenance areas are located behind the dock.

Garden Outlook, Arch 211, 2013

While creating a outlook, classroom, and docking space on the Gas Works Park waterfront, the Garden Out-
look also draws sustainability into the Park known for its pollution. By creating a second program of community
garden space, the building promotes clean practices in the Wallingford neighborhood. A vertical garden allows for
visitors to see the greenery from below, while the upper floor allows users plant and garden in their own plot.

Architecture internship with Wolken | Schaffer Architects, 2011

The relocation of the Sammamish Library from 228th Ave NE to the 228th Ave SE location allowed for Boys
and Girls Club of King County to repurpose the leftover building into the current Sammamish EX3 Teen Center.
During the late design and renovation processes, I documented the renovation, attended contractor meetings, and
provided student feedback on design decisions. The original blue color scheme was changed to the current

scheme because of my recommendation for an upbeat, energetic theme to reflect the nature of its users.
Other contributions include the tech center wall material, stage floor concrete treatment, and stage wall
paint treatment. The renovation process media I produced is on display at the Teen Center.
